Sue was flabbergasted by Reed's remark. She heard him say he loved her, but the "but" he used after it was huge. Reed's words implied Sue chose to flee to Atlantic because she was choosing Namor more than the refuge of an underwater fortress. Surely Reed had to know she wasn't looking for comfort in the arms of another man, even if it was Namor, a man whom she'd loved deeply at one time.
Sue cringed slightly. Perhaps it had been a little of both at the time. She feared Reed could not love her if she carried a child that wasn't his, or that he would seek only to save her through some scientific method. She didn't want to be fixed, what Sue needed was simply someone who wouldn't ask too many questions, someone who could let her heal without the feelings of shame and severe inadequacy.
But she did still have feelings for the King of Atlantis. Even considering him as her refuge proved to her that much. She trusted Namor to care for her despite the fact she'd chosen another man over him. Maybe she saw him as the strong silent type. Maybe that was why she went. In truth, Sue could no more determine her reasons for escaping to Atlantis than she could understand why she wouldn't trust Reed to be able to cope with her situation.
Receiving something even more unexpected while caught in her own speculation, Sue was embraced by Reed. She felt his stiffness, but as he held her and tried to reassure her that he would find her son, Sue suddenly realized it wasn't a stiffness caused by not wanting to hold her, not wanting to touch her. It was fear.
Sue choked on her breath. She felt so horrible, so shameful. Her husband was afraid to touch her, as if perhaps something she had was contagious. It ripped Sue's heart in two and her eyes filled with tears. She stood there, unsure if she should wrap her arms around Reed, if she should show how much she wanted to hold him, how much she missed his touch. Would he reject her further, push her from his arms in disgust?
A sob erupted from Sue's throat, then another. She couldn't stop herself from lifting her arms tentatively, a lump in her throat as she now feared Reed would deny her the one thing she wanted most in the world: himself.
"I trust you," Sue replied amid her crying. She held Reed tightly, willing him not to let her go or push her away. She found speaking difficult but forced herself to go on. "I'm sorry I didn't come to you first. I should have... I wanted to but ... I was so ashamed. I thought if I could run away and hide then you would never have to know what happened. It wasn't fair to you. I wasn't thinking..." Sue sniffled into Reed's shoulder and whispered, "I never wanted to hurt you, Reed. I love you."

Reed continued to hold Sue, though she didn't return the embrace. That was to be expected, all things considered. At least she didn't get mad about him holding her. It was probably the last time he would be able to and he wanted it to be as good as possible. He'd understand if she did, though. It wasn't what she wanted anymore.
But then her arms did reach up and return the embrace. Reed was a bit surprised by this, he really hadn't expected her to hug him back. Reed knew it was what he wanted, was he simply imagining it, his intense want for her to still want to be with him manifesting itself as illusions? No, that wasn't it. The embrace was tight and real. It felt good to Reed and it felt right. Knowing now that she was accepting of his touch, he tightened his own embrace around her. She sobbed into his shoulder and he laid his head down on top of hers, his right hand coming up to gently pat the back of her head.
God, he had missed her. How she felt, how she smelled, looked, anything his senses could perceive of her, he had missed. He had knew he had missed her, he had felt that pain all along, but holding her now made him realize he had missed her even more then he had thought. He just wanted to stay like this for a while. He suddenly wished he had made a device that could freeze an instant in time so they could just stay like this for eternity. Sue spoke, apologizing to him about her actions and told him she loved him. He didn't really need to hear why she did what she did, he already knew that, but hearing her say she still loved him was felt good. Hearing that was like hearing the blissful singing voice of an angel to his heart. Though, it was a bit confusing. And despite how nice it was to hear, it would only make things more painful for him when she left again. Still, he let himself savor the feeling while he could.
"It's okay, Sue." Reed told her, "I told you already, I understand why you did it. I'm the one that never made you feel like you could come to me with your problems, and for that, I am sorry. I only wish I had realized it before it was too late."

Sue felt Reed respond and place his arms around her, hugging her more tightly than at first. Warmth washed over her. It soothed her aching soul to feel her husband embrace her. Reed had seemed so distant, so disgusted by her when he found out about the baby. The woman truly thought she may never feel his loving touch again, but now she was not only receiving his care but also his affection. It was almost too good to be true.
Squeezing him more tightly, Sue buried her face in his chest. She had nearly forgotten his scent, that musky smell of a man who had been sitting in his laboratory for days working on a problem. Sue almost giggled at the memory of the many times she'd had to force him into the shower before allowing him to come to bed. Instead, she just smiled faintly against him while he held her, reveling in the moment she never thought she would see.
Reed broke the silence after her confession, apologizing for his own shortfalls and telling Sue he understood why she did what she did. Fresh tears sprung to her eyes believing Reed could ever understand her ill conceived plans at flight from her troubles. It seemed the right thing to do at the time, sparing her family from watching her abdomen grow with the child that was not Reed's. Namor had been most accommodating and sensitive to Sue's situation, and Sue didn't regret her attempt to hide. But now that she was here and Reed was holding her, she wondered if she had made the wrong choice after all.
Something Reed said at the end of his spoken words tugged at Sue's mind, causing her to wonder what he could mean. Reed said it was "too late". Did he mean it was too late for them now? Was he giving up on them? He hadn't said he loved her in return now that she thought of it. Perhaps he was over her and this was just his way of trying to make things easier on her. Sue's brow furrowed at the idea she was misreading his embrace. She wanted, needed him to love her again. If he didn't, if he couldn't ever look at her the same again then Sue wasn't sure what she would do.
Pulling away with much trepidation, Sue found her lower lip quivering as she looked up to her husband's darkened eyes. "What do you mean, 'before it was too late'?"

Reed didn't want it to end, but like everything, it eventually did. Sue pushed away from him and the reality that he may never get to hold her again sunk in like a rock, pulled by an anvil, pulled by twelve Titanic's. He felt instantly amd oddly cold as she moved away and his body made him feel like he could put out even Johnny's flames. It was most definitely not a pleasant feeling, in fact, it was probably the worst feeling he'd ever felt in his life. The hole within him tore larger and became a mass chasm within his being, never to be filled again.
"What do you mean, 'before it was too late'?"
Now why was she asking that, wasn't it obvious? Frankly, this was just rubbing it in now. It was bad enough he had to try and accept the whole thing, now he had to say it out loud. Was she trying to force him to accept it? He was already trying not to stand in the way of what she wanted, what more did she want from him? Reed turned his head to stare at the wall as he attempted to force himself to say it.
"You know... Before you... left me for..." That was about all he was getting out. He really didn't want to say the man's name and this was hard enough as it is without doing so. That would have to be enough though, he couldn't bring himself to go further then that yet.

After Sue asked the question she almost regretted it. The look on Reed's face was one of disgust and frustration. She just knew whatever he was going to say wasn't going to be good. Most likely, what he meant by "too late" was that he had moved on. He was angry with her for not trusting him, sickened by her being soiled by a damned robot of all things and that he couldn't believe she asked Namor for help. All of those were options running through her mind as he turned his face from her, and all of them were just as likely to be equally true.
Reed spoke brokenly, revealing his true thoughts (albeit incomplete ones). It took Sue a few confused seconds to grasp his unspoken words. Her brow furrowed as she looked at him in question. She left him for the safety of Atlantis. She didn't intend to leave him forever. Surely he knew that... Right?
Then it struck her. The look on Reed's face and his inability to finish his thought was not because of Atlantis or the safety she thought she found there. It was because of who ruled there. It was Namor that Reed couldn't speak the name of. It was Namor he thought she left him for.
Stepping forward, Sue put a hand on Reed's arm, lightly touching him to try to bring his attention back to her and make their eyes meet. "Reed, I didn't leave you for Namor," she explained quietly. "I left only to find safety in his kingdom. Nothing happened between us."
Taking a deep breath, Sue let out a shuddering exhale. "He's just my friend, Reed. I have always been committed to us, to you."

It was painful waiting there like that. Reed felt like a clamp was on his heart as he waited for Sue to respond. He really didn't know what he expected her to say or do, he just knew he had to get it out there. Find out what was happening so he knew what he was dealing with. He felt her place her hand on his arm suddenly and he forced himself to look at her. It was hard, watching her tell him would make it seem more real and more painful. Not something he was looking forward to.
Then Sue spoke the words he hadn't dared to believe she would say. He couldn't have believed it. Without a word she had run off to a man she cared for entrusted him with her safety, keeping Reed out of the loop completely. All but a note was found. A note that could have been written by anyone really. Sue could have been dead and laying in one of those ditches corpses seemed to find themselves in.
"I just... didn't know what to think. You were gone, and then you were there, and... " Reed let out a sigh. "I'm sorry." He probably should have trusted her more, but seeing her there with him threw his reasoning out the window. He didn't want to believe it, but he had. He felt stupid now, but... also relieved. The relief washed over him as reality finally sunk in. She wasn't going anywhere. She hadn't left him and she was back. He suddenly hugged her again, so happy he hadn't lost her.
"I'm so sorry, Sue. For everything." He told her. "So you're back then?" he asked, just wanting to hear it come from her. That she was back, and that aside from a new baby they had to find and take in, things were going to be starting to get as back to normal as they could.

Sue saw immediately what all the tension was over in the minutes leading up to now. Reed had sincerely believed she had left him for Namor. She couldn't understand why he would think that would be her response to being impregnated by a robot, but she understood it on another level. Namor had always been the "other man", the open Reed knew in his heart Sue had loved as she also loved him. What Reed had failed to take into account at times when they were near the Atlantean king was that Sue chose him, not Namor, and he need not feel that jealousy anymore.
But then again, Sue caused it this time. She ran off to her former lover without a word of reason to Reed, and when he finally found her in the Atlantean realm, she was pregnant. Of course, even explaining who the father was (or rather, what) seemed not to lay his fears to rest. Reed always had been and likely forever would be fearful that one day his wife would wake up and believe she had made a mistake. Sue didn't think she would ever do that, but neither could she deny that Namor was the man she ran to when in dire need of help.
"Yes, I'm back... if you'll have me," Sue replied and then sighed heavily. "This was all my fault. I should have come to you, not run to Namor. I just.... I was afraid and embarrassed. I didn't want you to know what happened."
It sounded incredibly selfish to Sue now that she said it aloud, but it was the truth. She hadn't wanted Reed to know she was so damaged, so tainted. She feared it would change his love for her in some way, but Sue should have known better. She lowered her head and took her gaze to the floor in shame.
"I should have trusted you not to hate me, but I couldn't... I hate myself for what happened. I should have been stronger..."
