We understand that in a play-by-post RPG there are some special abilities, or powers, that are given to characters in the comics that really do not translate to a super power when posting. Here, we've attempted to define for you what the Staff at Marvel Heroes RPG considers a super-power when looking at applications for both Marvel Canons and Original Character (OC) creations. If you need further explanation or clarification on something listed here, please PM a staff member!
- In general, characters who have powers in their profiles on Marvel.com are considered powered. There are exceptions, however. There are rare instances of a character that has been de-powered in the comics, or who has gone back and forth between having powers and not in their lifetime. (ex. Elektra) In these rare circumstances, the character can safely be considered un-powered if there are no powers listed in the application.
- Characters with superior skills due to natural talent and practice will not count as powered, so long as Marvel.com is in agreement. (ex. Hawkeye)
- Any character who possesses magical talent or practices sorcery is considered super-powered. Magic party tricks or sleight of hand (ex. Harry Houdini style) are not included in this category.
- Characters who have personal-use, technological paraphernalia that make them capable of performing super human feats or duplicating super human powers are considered powered. (ex. Iron Man)
- Characters armed with mass-produced technology (military weapons, etc.) are exempt from being counted as super-powered. Weapons and gadgets that are unique to a specific individual and are above what could be easily acquired DO count as making the character powered. (ex. Winter Soldier's arm) LMDs, however, do not qualify as they do not grant super human abilities to the individual, rather they are merely decoys. Lastly, prosthetics that give no tangible above-normal qualities will be considered non-powered.
- Formulas and other plot devices to slow aging (ex. Infinity Formula) are RARE in the Marvel Universe and will NOT be permitted for use by any Original Character Creation without express prior consent by Staff for plot purposes. Canons who possess slow aging alone are not considered super-powered for the purposes of this RPG, but any further enhancement to their physical bodies (such as enhanced stamina, durability, strength) or mental capabilities (ex. eidetic memory, increased IQ) DOES make them a powered character. Long life spans are not to be confused with immortality or healing factors.
- Clones, mutants and aliens are not automatically super-powered as long as they are equal in limitations to what a normal human being can perform. Longer life spans for them would also be exempt, if that is the only difference their species can produce that is beyond normal human limitations.
- Differences that are merely cosmetic in nature (ex. Jazz the blue mutant) do not count as super-powered. This applies to character who have only visual differences (ex. odd coloring, a third eye. etc.) but also minor physiological differences (two hearts, three stomachs, etc.) that give no clear advantage over normal human beings. Chameleons, having an extra arm, breathing underwater, or possessing night vision are all examples of seemingly minor advantages that would qualify as super-powers.
- Any real, documented human disease/malformation/etc. is not a super power. (ex. albinism and hypertrichosis).
- Characters with individual tech-arsenals and/or armies will be handled on a case-by-case basis and could be considered powered, especially if the technology used by said armies or arsenals is equal to or above what SHIELD would possess.
