Peter was always funny. MJ considered that it was his sense of humor that truly drew her to him to begin with. He could make her smile even on her worst of days. Beyond that, he had an empathy and understanding of her that was impossible to find among any of the other guys she had dated before him. That combination of humor and compassion coupled with his good looks made Peter Parker irresistible.
The rock hard abs didn't hurt, either.
She smiled and rolled her eyes when he mentioned taking them to Tahiti or the Bahamas. Her smile peeked into laughter at his butler comments, then rolled into a cuddle as he drew her near. A girl could get used to this... But then as quickly as she had the thought, it died on his next words.
"What rumblings?" she asked. Mary Jane sat up from her place under his arm to look into her husband's face. Concern etched her features. "And what's this about your last night on earth?"
Worry reflected in her eyes. It was there often, but she tried not to show it to Peter as much. Of course she was worried about him every time he was out fighting the bad guys. She worried every single day or night that he donned the spandex and went out to play New York City's hero when all she wanted him to do was stay home and cuddle with her on the sofa and be all her own. Only her own. But she knew his sense of responsibility, that since he was given his powers that he felt an obligation to use them for good. It pained her and yet made her proud, and every single time she worried. Yet this time felt more ominous. Maybe it was how he said it, or just that she was neck deep enjoying all of Peter's attention and detested the idea that it would soon end. Regardless, Mary Jane was not so good at concealing her feeling of anxiety this time around.
"Is it really that bad, Peter?"

Way to go Parker. Always gotta open your mouth at the wrong time and ruin a good thing, he thought. But then again you'd of had to tell her eventually, that's part of the deal. No secrets.
"Rumors," he answered, voice somber. "Could be nothing, could be something. From the sounds of it though something big is stirring in the criminal underground."
He cringed, realizing he sounded like some wannabe Noir detective as he explained the situation.
"Not long ago I had a run in with Shriek. Mister Negative was after her, she had been framed for something for once, and it was a whole deal. But since then when I bust the non-supers, I have been hearing things. With the Kingpin gone there is a major power vacuum within organized crime and everyone is vying for a piece of the pie. Tombstone, Hammerhead, The Hood, Negative, and more are all jockeying to take over Fisk's old turf and, well, the whole of NYC was his turf. Even color flying street thugs are getting in on the act. And to make matters worse, there is this whole Goblin Gang, and we both know who is really behind them."
Just saying it aloud made him shudder, the food in his stomach flipping. The whole city really could be teetering on the edge of a full-scale gang war and rather than just mob families as was usually the case, this time there were super powered forces involved. While he would have put his money on Mr. Negative, he knew that with Osborn getting into politics he'd do something to drive the body count up so he could swoop in and "save" the city. No matter who won though, New York would lose.
"Like I said, just rumors right now babe. Nothing to be done but keep an ear to the ground and hope for the best. Right now nobody seems to want to cross a line, but with the Gobby involved, we all know common sense is trumped by the levels of crazy he can bring to the party. If it happens though..."
You say if, but you know it is when. Been doing this long enough to have a feel for these things.
"Well, let's not let it ruin out night huh? My other life has interrupted enough of our plans over the years that there is no point in letting hypothetical gang wars we can doing about get in the way."

Mary Jane frowned as Peter tried to explain his earlier statement. At first he called it rumors, but the more he spoke, MJ got the distinct feeling it was more than that. Peter was worried. And that worried Mary Jane not just a little bit.
It truly wasn't very often that her husband acted very worried about something, and that was quite the accomplishment considering his alter ego. Spider-Man fought Goblins and Lizards, and sometimes even aliens - as if the former weren't strange enough! His life was always filled with dangers both real and unimaginable, but Pete always seemed to take things with a grain of salt and a hefty sense of humor. Right now, none of his humor was showing through and it appeared they were all out of salt. Mary Jane frowned, the creases showing on her forehead as he tried to unsuccessfully dismiss the situation.
"You don't have to play it down to protect me, Peter," she told him. "If the rumors are scaring you and your own danger sense knows something bad is coming, then I'm glad you told me."
He sighed and tried to dismiss it in favor of a better date night. Mary Jane was hesitant to agree, but nodded after a moment. "Deal, but if anything changes and you find out something for sure, you have to tell me." Her green eyes pleaded with him. "I don't want to be blindsided. I'm your wife and I want to know everything that concerns you, even if it means I might get more worried for a while."

"Don't worry, the second I know anything concrete beyond a bad feeling or whispers from the scum of the earth I will tell you. Promise," Peter replied, gently kissing the top of her head.
He meant it too. MJ had stood beside him for far too long and through too much craziness and danger for him to start sugar coating things now. Once he had something resembling the truth, he'd tell her. He owed her that much.
"But hey, the bad? It could be a long way away or even tomorrow, but it isn't right now. So..."
Pressing a remote of some kind and having to hit the buttons several times followed by a whack to the back of the thing as a whole, he switched the song on the old boom box. Another older R&B love song this one was just a tad better for what he had in mind.
"If you are done with dinner," he began, extending his hand. "May I have this dance milady? And by dance I mean you looking gorgeous while I try to not step on your feet...or my own. You know sometimes you'd think that spider-sense would be more useful than it is."

Mary Jane had to accept Peter's response that he would be forthright with her concerning the impending doom on the horizon. (Not that bizarre wacko from Latveria, but doom in general. Don't let your mind wander!) He hadn't always told her everything. Sometimes he held his secrets and kept them on a tight leash, but MJ had been working with him on the trust issue because, if they didn't have complete trust in one another, what did they have? A healthy libido could only take them so far, and Mary Jane had considered leaving Peter in the past for very similar reasons, but she loved him far too much to simply give up on him. Thus, she pressed for more vulnerability with her, more honesty; and, through the more open lines of communication and more realistic expectations, Mary Jane had rediscovered the man of her dreams. Now, her biggest concern was that the dangers he was sensing coming to the city wouldn't take him away from her for too long.
He kissed her head then comically tried to change the song on the boom box. MJ watched as she stuffed more burger in her mouth, and nearly choked on it as the hero who saved thousands from the bad guys couldn't quite make an old stereo system work. He hit it and finally seemed to get the appropriate response. Mary Jane smiled at him (having swallowed, of course!) then watched as he extended a hand to her and asked for a dance. Her smile turned softer and approving as she reached up a hand and took his, abandoning her unfinished food to the bag on the rooftop in which it came. "How could I resist?" She stood close to him and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Someday maybe we'll teach a spider to dance, but for today, how about we just sway in one another's arms and enjoy the moment?" She kissed him tenderly, but briefly, then leaned back to look into his eyes. There was as much fun in her tone as swooning as she said, "Besides, this way my toes will still look good in tomorrow's stilettos and I get to be kept warm by the most handsome man in the city. It's a win-win situation if you ask me."

"No argument here beautiful," he replied.
Peter relished the moment of tenderness and normalcy so often absent from the life of a superhero. For the moment at least he was able to forget all the responsibility, the looming gang war, the potential money problems, and more. At that moment in time all that mattered, all that existed for him was Mary Jane. The world at large and the problems of it paled in comparison to the fact that his wife was with him and happy. Sure it was a momentary relief from the storm that was approaching, but he'd take what he could get.
While Spider-Man tried to forget about the dark things in the world, all the nasty, cruel aspects of life they refused to do the same in kind. A few buildings away, out of sight of the wallcrawling hero and his wife, a dark figure was crouched atop a water tower. It watched the happy couple and smiled cruelly.
That's right Parker. You just relax. Worry about the little shoving contest between Goblin and Fisk and all those other clowns and their big bad guns. Because the worst is yet to come little Spider. And when it gets here you are going to long for mobsters and hitmen.
