Original Character RPG Rules to Follow - No gods or cosmic powered OCs allowed. If the Canon isn't playable, neither is an OC version of them, or anyone related to them. This includes OC Asgardians, Olympians, Hell Lords, or other cosmic gods, demi-gods or entities like Heralds for Galactus.
- Adamantium, Vibranium and Carbonadium in any form or variant is restricted for use by OCs without playing it out through the role play to obtain it. This also requires pre-approval from staff before it is gained. Understand that if canons can not get their hands on it easily then OCs can't either.
- Likewise, weapons will not be of the same strength as admantium or vibranium. It's rare! It's unique! We don't want it abused.
- No more OC Weapon X projects. (Weapon XXX or Weapon DCLXVI either!) Seriously, just no.
- Super Soldier serum success is rare. Therefore using it or a derivative in an OC will be scrutinized closely and not automatically approved.
- OC children or other relatives of canon characters will not be allowed. Allowing this can seriously alter the story line for the canon and when it passes from one player to another in the RPG. It is hard to keep track of. Keep relations canon, but explore "relationships" all you like.
- If you want to link your OC to a canon, please check with the player of the canon and the staff to ensure the association will be permitted. Don't write a history of interaction or association with any canon without prior permission. Please note, an OC cannot be affiliated with a canon team initially. They may join in play if they otherwise qualify for the team.
- Limitations will be made to strength levels with a maximum of 10 tons for any OC whose main superhuman power is not super strength. Like Hulk, whose main power is his strength and his character depends on it for its specialty, if your OC is highly dependent on super strength then exceptions can be made. Note that if your main ability is strength, we expect there to be much fewer and less "powerful" abilities listed with it.
- No clones. Period.
- We will not permit power matching of OCs to canons. For example: An OC with a healing factor will not be as strong as Wolverine's; an OC with energy absorption will not be as powerful as Bishop; or, an OC with magic will not be as powerful as Doctor Strange.
- The more powers an OC has, the weaker they each become. You can incorporate one incredibly awesome power, a few great ones, or a bunch of lower powered ones. A "jack of all trades is master of none" mentality is imposed.
- No time traveling. Time or dimensional travel via an outside source to arrive in this universe is plausible, but time travel messes everything up so don't apply for it as power because, honestly, we won't approve it.
- Just like the powers, the feats that can be accomplished with magic need to be CLEARLY DEFINED. Instead of saying "Can harness mystical energies", say "Can harness magical energy to form a shield, a portal, and a moderately powerful blast that is about as strong as a standard repulsor ray." Between one and five moderate magical tricks are optimal.
- Items and technology should be limited to arsenals that are feasible for the character. Items must be as well-defined and explained as powers if they aren't normal things. (Ex. A machine gun is a normal thing.)
- If it's not written down (and approved) in your application, you cannot utilize it in the game.
- If your OC is a genius inventor then invent it! Write up technology inventions or weapons upgrades using the template on the Upgrades board. Get it approved and then you can use it in a thread.
- Dimensional travel is limited and based on staff discretion. Basically, if you travel in dimensions to teleport (like Nightcrawler), sure. If you go to unknown dimensions on a regular basis and pull unknown items from them to use in the game (thus making your character unpredictable or all powerful) then no.
- To know what makes an OC powered, see this thread .
- Generally speaking, most images to represent your OC are fine with some exceptions. The image cannot violate Proboards TOS (so, no nudity, drug use, etc.). If you use a character image from another comics company, do not use any big names (From DC, Crimson Fox would be fine; Robin is definitely not). You may use an image of an existing Marvel character at mod discretion, but again no big names (no Thor, no Cyclops). If you are using an image of a Marvel character and somebody actually gets accepted as that character, you will need to find another image even though you were using it first. We also ask that real life 'face claims' not be of actors from Marvel movies (MCU or otherwise) in case the canon's player wants to use them (e.g. Hugh Jackman for any character who isn't Wolverine).
The idea of the above Custom (or Original) Character Guidelines are to minimize the possibility of creating too much ambiguity in an application and thus allowing for "loopholes" during game play. Also, many players have tried to copycat canons or otherwise play as if they are more powerful than the gods of the Universe. It is why we have created this guide and why the moderators will refer to it in OC applications. This is a Marvel Universe. We love creative freedom, but we dislike unoriginal characters, vagueness around powers, tech or limits, and players using loopholes from their original character applications while writing in the game simply because the character is not established in comics and therefore there were no pre-defined boundaries. Martyr's Custom Character Check List
Niche protection, or is this character necessary:
Most of the canon characters in the Marvel Universe were created for a purpose. They exist because previous characters just did not work as well for that particular story, for various reasons. Instead, a brand new character is required to make it work. In this way, you should ask if your character is needed or if his niche, her reason for existence, isn’t filled by another character. Consider: Do you want to make a hero with lots of firepower? Try the Iron Man or the Punisher. Do you want mastery over fire? Try Pyro or the Human Torch.
It may be necessary to point out that simply being similar in one aspect to another character does not too similar to be included in the story. Take for instance the X-men who have both Cyclops and Gambit. Both are energy projectors with Scott’s projections coming in the form of optic blasts and Gambit’s coming from exploding cards. However, their relatively similar powers are not the only thing which defines them. Cyclops is a natural leader who seeks to place the burdens of the entire team on his shoulders, whereas, Gambit started out as a thief in it only for himself. The two characters are vastly different in history and personality but still have similar powers. It is their differences rather than their similarities which define the niche they play on their team.
Power Overwhelming, or the folly of the Titan:
Okay, you have a character who won’t be stepping on someone else’s toes. Now it’s time to define your hero or villain’s powers or abilities. Characters can range from a walking brick like Rogue to a normal human being like Hawkeye. The trouble comes when you try to be too much. Many new players go overboard with their powers creating a laundry list of everything they could possibly need for any situation. Do not do this. First, such a character won’t be accepted for the very reason that for all the powers they have, they lose whatever could make them interesting. Nothing can challenge a character like that. Furthermore, part of being on a team, which most of us, heroes or villains are, is being aided by our teammates. While we might not be able to fly, or teammate can cover it. While we might not be able to provide the brains, we certainly can provide the brawn.
A good rule of thumb is to look over your powers and see if they are all thematically similar. If you’re a super-strong, flying shape-shifter who can shoot energy blasts and walk through walls, there’s a problem. While you can certainly point to canon characters who are not thematically similar, like Rogue, her powers were originally limited to absorption and she only later gained her other abilities later. Likewise with Emma Frost and her diamond skin.
Feet of Clay, or what makes Marvel, Marvel?:
What defines Marvel and its characters more than anything is humanity. That despite all their power, heroes and villains alike are not two-dimensional carbon copies but fully realized characters. To borrow Uncle Ben’s words, “With great power comes great responsibility”.
Let’s say you want to be a jet setting billionaire who uses powered armor to fight for justice? Okay, Tony Stark but your greatest enemy will not be in the form of flesh and blood but in the form of a bottle. You will fight your demons day in and day out all the while trapped inside the shell of your own creation to do anything physical lest your weak heart give out.
As such you should consider giving your character flaws that go beyond an ice-based character being vulnerable to fire. This makes the character more in line with the mainstream Marvel universe and more interesting of a character to boot.
Motive, or why am I in Spandex?:
Gone are the days when most heroes who can get away with gaining powers and immediately saying “I will use these gifts for good!” or the villain who spreads evil for evil’s sake (although some still do exist). Most have a reason for doing what they do and your character should have one as well. Considering your character’s past is a good way of figuring out their future, what they are likely to do in other situations.
Is your character following in someone else’s footsteps like Havok following his brother Cyclops? Is your character motivated by revenge to go out and right the wrongs of the world like the Punisher? Is your character motivated by guilt over their own inaction like Spider-Man? Is your character lashing out at a world that belittled and mocked them like the Blob? The more you think about these sort of things the better your character will become.
Fitting in, or adapting a character to the Marvel Universe:
Some original characters are inspired by existing characters. Inspired is all well and good but, as the core rules state, they should be adapted to their new environment.
To give an example of adaptation, let's assume you want to make a Marvel version of "Hiro" from the anime "Super Ninja Squad". In the world of "Super Ninja Squad", all super-human abilities come from qi and "Hiro" has a few such abilities. He comes from the "Alpha Clan" which is at war with the "Beta Clan".
Furthermore, "Hiro" as a "Grade 20 Qi-Master" has the following powers due to qi manipulation: he can shoot fireballs, he can fly, he can become completely invulnerable at will, he can stop other characters from using their qi and he can shapeshift.
The first thing that would need to be modified would be the war between the "Alpha Clan" and the "Beta Clan", as neither exist in the Marvel Universe. Consider substituting them for an in-universe organizational rivalry like SHIELD versus Hydra, and have the character try and join SHIELD after his application. Secondly, you should not describe your character as a "Grade 20 Qi-Master" as such a phrase means absolutely nothing within the universe. Simply saying that he or she is skilled in martial arts to the point that they can perform superhuman feats is fine as it has happened in the Marvel Universe (Iron Fist for example).
As for their powers, projectiles do exist and are indeed quite frequent in the Marvel Universe as is flight. The problem comes with his other powers, complete invulnerability, qi blocking and shapeshifting. The invulnerability may not mesh well with the universe as true invulnerable characters do not exist (as PC’s anyway) and near-invulnerable characters are rare. Consider changing him a bit where the invulnerability is of a lower magnitude or a temporary condition or some other modification. Secondly, the qi blocking does not work well as qi is not the primary justification for powers in the Marvel Universe. Consider dropping this power entirely or explicitly stating that it can only be used on other characters who ARE qi practitioners (Iron Fist again). The shape-shifting likewise causes problems. This buffet-style power may be common to another fictional universe as each power is merely a special move, no different from playing two different instruments. However, in the Marvel Universe powers are generally internally consistent. Either use only the shape-shifting or drop it entirely to make a better adapted character.
Hopefully these thought experiments will provide you with the tools needed to create a custom character which is fully intrigue to the Marvel Universe.

We are glad you are here! Marvel Heroes RPG (Role-Playing Game) is a Play-by-Post message board RPG where you get to to collaborate with other players from around the globe to create awesome stories within the main Marvel Universe! If you've never written in a PbP (Play-by-Post) forum RPG like this one, then take some time to look around! See how things work! Ask questions! I think you'll find it's a fairly simple concept to grasp, and if you enjoy writing then a PbP RPG is definitely for you! This RPG is open to everyone, from the novice writer to people who have been doing it for a long time (though admittedly you might be most comfortable somewhere in between!). If you are not a comic book reader, it's OK. The Internet is there for you to answer questions about Marvel that might arise. If you've only ever seen the movies coming out of Hollywood or the cartoons on Netflix, that's OK, too! The RPG will lie within the comic verse in general so what you know from other media is still helpful. We like to allow a lot of creative freedom in the forum, and for that reason we don't expect you to regurgitate everything you've read in the comics within your stories. Take the liberty to make new stories for the characters. Let them meet new people, beat up foes they might never have met in the comics, or romance someone other than their usual love interests. Because we like creative freedom, we also allow each member to create 2 original super-powered characters. We have some general rules for this that you'll want to check out, and you'll need to be even more specific in your application for them than a canon, but they are welcomed and included in the RPG play! Before you begin there are a few things of note: - The first rule of the forum is mutual respect! This goes for your writing as well as your conversations. If you follow this, then we'll never have any issues.
- Read the rules so we're all on the same page! They look like a lot to read, but most are common sense, especially if you've been in a forum RPG in the past.
- If you've never played in a PbP RPG, the FAQ can be extremely helpful!
- To understand better what is required in the application, read the entire thread under the template code before you copy/paste it into a new thread to see what Revan says to help explain the requirements.
- For original characters, read this guide to know the OC rules and find some thoughts to maybe help improve on your existing ideas!
- In this RPG, we have ignored the House of M story line from the comics in order to allow for the largest amount of playable canon mutants.
- We have played through the Super Human Civil War, but in our RPG it was Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel) who caused a catastrophic event while fighting Ultron that killed thousands in Texas and prompted the Super-human Registration Act.
- We are currently going through a version of Secret Invasion.
- We have not explored Dark Reign, the Fifty State Initiative or World War Hulk story lines (yet). So basically if it happened after the Skrull Invasion, it hasn't happened here.
- There is a word count minimum on the game boards. It's only 150 words, but you won't be able to post if you don't meet the minimum!
- All players write in third person, past tense in the role playing forums.
- We have a Discord server where we talk a lot! DISCORD LINK IS HERE!
Feel free to approach a Moderator with any questions you might have. We're here to help you! We want you to have an enjoyable time at our forum, and we will do everything in our power to help you make sure that happens! we look forward to meeting you and writing with you in the near future!!

Q. I'm new. What do I do?A. Go read the rules! Begin with the Prime Directive (aka the core rules), then look for the Character Application Template in the Interview Room. Check the Taken List to see if the canon character you want is available, then post an application (using the template) in the New applications board. If you're making an original character (OC), be sure to check the RPG guidelines for them. Q. What is Play by Post Role Playing?A. Marvel Heroes RPG is a play by post (PbP) role playing game (RPG). PbP is a type of online text-based role-playing game in which players (aka. writers or simmers) interact with each other and a predefined environment via text (our environment is Marvel). In PbP games there usually aren’t statistics and experience points like the more traditional tabletop rp. PbP games are all about collaborative storytelling. Each character is portrayed through paragraphs of description alone, and therefore the strength, skills and abilities of the character are open to interpretation through the storytelling and not a number on a stat sheet. Q. What Marvel Universe is this set in?A. We play the Marvel 616 (the main) universe here. Q. What is setting within Marvel history in this RPG?A. Our game began right before the Civil War. The War was played out in this RPG so a few minor differences will be mentioned throughout play, such as Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel) was the cause of the Registration Act going to Congress. She destroyed a town in Texas by accidentally blowing up a damn while fighting Ultron. Other events in Marvel History we completely ignore, such as M Day and Spider-Man revealing his identity to the world. If you ever have a question about if something happened in rpg history while making a character either ask a Mod or check the character trackers board to see if their history has been recorded by a previous player. Q. How do I know what characters are already taken?A. We maintain a running list of who is taken on site. The link is at the top of the site page [TAKEN] near the link for this very [FAQ]. You can also click this link HERE. The list includes real names and code names. There is also a short list of characters that are unplayable for plot reasons. Any character who appears in Marvel comics not on either list can more than likely be played.
Q. I want to make my own character. Are there any rules I should know about?A. In general, any original character will not be approved if they are too close to another universe's character or another Marvel canon; if the story for this character is illogical for the Marvel Universe; or, if the powers you come up with would be more powerful than a similar canon or otherwise too OP for play in the game. There are specific rules here. Martyr's Custom Character Guide is a good place to start looking for clues on how to make a good OC. If your character is magic based, try checking out this off-site guide to magic in the Marvel Universe. To see what we consider "super powers" in the RPG, check this thread. Q. Why does my OC have to be less powerful than a similar canon character?A. The reason we ask that OCs are less powerful than canons is twofold. First we want to ensure this forum maintains a Marvel flavor, and we feel that the best way to do that is to keep Marvel canon more prevalent and, hence, more powerful than OCs. Second, when measuring OCs powers, we need standards by which to know if something is too powerful and the best standards are, of course, Marvel canons. Q. How many characters are we permitted to have?A. When you first join the site, you can have up to four characters, one of which can be an OC (see below). If you take four characters, at least one must be a villain. As you post, you will unlock more and more characters. You don't have to keep apping characters though. Some players only want that one character, after all. See the Prime Directive for more details on how this happens! Q. What does "OC" mean?A. OC is simply short for "Original Character." An Original character is any creation from your mind that does not exist in Marvel or any other universe. (Note: bringing an anime or DC character over to this Universe does not make them original. It makes them copied. Don't do that!) Q. What does "OOC" mean?A. Out of Character. If you have to say something in a post that's not in-character role-playing or is some knowledge contained outside the story written, this is what you can place at the top or bottom of the post to speak player to player. Q. What does "IC" mean?A. In-Character. Sometimes when talking to other role players in Discord or via PM they will say something is IC. All that means is that is information known while In-Character, or by their characters in the story. Q. I have a support character and I want to do more with them. What do I do?A. Support characters are minor characters who are there to support major characters. They're the everyday people in the lives of (mostly) superheroes. Think Aunt May or Willie Lumpkin. They're used when necessary for a storyline but aren't really used to drive their own plotlines. Sometimes a player of that type of character wants to do a lot more with them. They would submit an upgrade for them, asking to be moved from support character to either hero/antihero or villain status. If the player has the necessary slot in their character roster, the character will be reclassified until the player stops playing the character. The upgraded character will also be treated like a hero/anti-hero or a villain for the purposes of the Activity Check rules. Q. Why hasn't a Mod looked at my application yet?A. The staff have lives outside of the internet that sometimes interfere with our ability to be online daily. We try to be on as often as we can but sometimes we simply can't be here as often as we would like. That said, we do try to check in often, at minimum three to four times a week and most of us every day. We promise we will try to get to your application as soon as humanly possible, but remember we are only human and sometimes even the gods forget. Q. I'm done with my application. Does it get rejected if one of the mods doesn't look at it in 14 days?A. First, we would hope that it doesn't take that long, but no. The 14 day rule is meant to make the new app section less cluttered with incomplete applications. An application is incomplete either when it's not finished (labeled as WIP or missing a section), or when a mod has asked the player to change/clarify something. Also, if you are going back and forth with a mod about your application, each time the mod asks you to do something triggers a new 14 days (unless they outright reject it). Q. A Mod asked me to edit my application and I did. Why hasn't anyone re-checked it yet?A. The staff has an internal policy that when one moderator begins working with someone on an application, that person is the one who finishes it. That way we don't step on one another's toes by approving something that did not yet meet the requirements that someone else felt were necessary. So if you're waiting for your application to be re-checked or approved and one of the Mods has already begun working with you on it, don't be surprised if you see another mod approving other applications and not checking yours. It isn't personal. It's just our policy. Q. What does "Mary Sue/Gary Stu" mean?A. A Mary Sue is a female character (Mary Stu is a male character) who is classified as unrealistic, perfect, or without faults. She may have faults, but they are perfect faults, clichéd ones. These fictional characters have overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lack noteworthy flaws, and primarily function as a wish-fulfillment fantasy for the author or reader. (ex. The typical fairytale princess is always a Mary Sue character.) To see if your Original Creation is too perfect, take this test! The lower your score the better, but be honest or the results will be unreliable! Q.What does "OP" mean?A. Over-Powered. If you are creating an original character and the powers you attempt to gain are too cosmic or God-like, you'll probably find a moderator telling you the character is "too OP". In general, we do not permit the play of canons that are extremely easy to abuse and we don't permit similar original creations. It's true many if not most of the canon Marvel characters are very OP, but Original creations of similar powers and originals cannot be made greater than their counterparts just to keep things fair to play. (ie. A man in a specially made powered suit cannot be on par or greater than Iron Man's). This is a Marvel board and we like to pay homage to that Universe by generally keeping their canons superior. Q. What is Meta Gaming?A. Meta Gaming is defined as when a player has become aware of or told about information pertaining to or directly regarding an ongoing storyline or situation and then, by means of role play, uses that information either to their own benefit or as a means to interact with or against other players. Simply put, it is using what they learn OOC, IC. Q. What is god-modding?A. It's actually correctly called "godmoding", in reference to the "god mode" you can enter in a game to become invincible. In role play, it generally means trying to exert too much control over the plot and other characters. This can happen by telling people how to RP their characters, putting words in another characters mouth, or making a character perform an action that their player did not write. (See the Definition of God-Modding thread for more examples.) Q. Can I kill another character?A. A comic character? No. Never permanently. A original character? If the player says it's OK, (i.e., they are quitting, or just think it's time for a new character and want to get rid of one, then sure). Should you PM everyone saying, "Hey! Can I kill your character off?" No. Don't. It's bad form and will probably make people annoyed with you. Q. Can I at least hurt another character?A. By all means, attempt to. The site's about superheroes, obviously there's going to be fights! But make it realistic. Well, as realistic as you can when you have superpowers. Check the God-Modding thread to make sure you know how to play this out because while you can throw a punch, it's up to the other player whether or not to dodge it or accept the hit. Q. Can I join in other people's threads?A. If they say "Open," or have no other restriction listed in their title at all, then yes. If they ask for someone specific, and that someone's not you, then don't just post in it! However if you feel like your character should really be in that thread for whatever reason, then you can PM the person who started the thread and ask to join. Otherwise, if a thread says, "Closed", "Invite", or an individual's name, don't think about it! If it says "Ask" then definitely PM them and ask! Q. Can a character be in two places at once?A. Yes and no. Yes, your character can be in two threads at once, but keep in mind that if your character is supposed to be in Nevada battling symbiotes then they can't be back in NYC fighting someone else on the same "day". Basically, if you are putting a character in two places (or multiple threads) then remember not to make those threads ones that are assumed to be occurring that the same time. (Generally this possibility happens mostly in main site plot threads.) Q. I've written a post in the role play game, but it won't post. Why?A. In the role play areas within the game there is a word limit enforced in order to make a post. In general, on almost every role play board the word limit is 150 words (500 words for the Solo section) in order to make a post or reply. (This is not in effect for any boards outside of the game.) Try typing a little bit more and see if that post button works! Q. What is a bookmark?A. A bookmark is a handy-dandy tool that is useful to help keep track of the multiple threads in which your character(s) are a part. Q. How do I bookmark (or remove a bookmark from) a thread?A. At the top your thread, there is a drop down menu called "Actions". One of the options is "bookmark this thread." Or, at the top right corner of your reply, there is an icon that looks like a gear. Click it for another drop down menu. Once bookmarked, you can use these two places again to un-bookmark a thread. Q. Can I see all of my bookmarked threads at once?A. Yes. Click on the button at top menu bar that reads, "Bookmarks". Once there, you can view all of your existing bookmarked threads and easily click on one to go to it. Q. Can I get messages when my threads are updated?A. To our knowledge, with Proboards recent update there is not yet a way to receive PMs or email notifications when a thread is updated. Q. Oh no! I lost a character during an Activity Check! What do I do now?A. The situation is a bit different depending on what type of character it is. Note: These apply if this is the first time it has occurred. If it is a frequent issue, you may be restricted to one character as a form of probation.
For an original character, you need to inform a staff member of the situation and your character may be restored.
For a support character, if you have posted an in character post for the character between the last activity check's end period and the end period of the most recent activity check, you need only inform a staff member of the situation and your character may be restored. If you do not have an in character post with a support character, you can inform a staff member of the situation and your character may be restored if nobody else has apped them in the meantime.
For a non-support canon character, if you have posted an in character post for the character between the last activity check's end period and the end period of the most recent activity check, you need only inform a staff member of the situation and your character may be restored. If you do not have an in character post with a non-support canon character, you need to reapply for the character with A. additional history to reflect site changes in history and B. a new sample post. This is to require some amount of effort to get them back. Note that in this situation, if another player's application is accepted first, you will lose the character.
Q. I see some people with No-Prizes! What are those? How do I get them?A. The ends and outs of what No-Prizes are and how to get them can be found HERE.
Q. Is there an easy way to communicate with everyone?A. Yes! We have a Discord channel. If you are a member of Discord, you can join the server by clicking on THIS link. Please note that this link creates a temporary connection to the server. Talk to staff on Discord or PM for a long term membership. If you do not, you'll have to go to this link each time. If you don't have a Discord account (it's free!), click on THIS link. Joining the server is NOT a requirement to join the site, but it does make communication with other players much easier. Q. Does the site have a TV Tropes page?A. It does! Click HERE for more information. If you just want to go directly to the TV Tropes page, click HERE.
Q. What is registration?A. In universe, we have Superhero Registration Act, much like in the mainline universe. You can see the list HERE.

Unplayable Characters Characters listed below are currently unplayable due to plot reasons.
+ FOOTNOTES + ____________________________ - No character will be ever permitted to be claimed who is inclined to do universe altering evil (such as destroy worlds, etc.) or has godlike powers (omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence). These banned canons will be given permission to be played only on a case-by-case basis inasmuch as they are required to fulfill a plot. The use of these canons will be permitted only at the discretion of staff and will be very limited.
- Furthermore, canons who are deemed too overpowered to be played in full capacity in the game (too many powers, etc.) may need to be subdued in their power set in order to be accepted for RPG play. This is at the discretion of staff and may not always appear consistent since the staff is made up of different people, but we do and will continue to attempt to be fair.
- All characters, whether OC or canon, can be removed from a player's care at any point in time if the staff becomes aware of abuse of the character's power, an inability to play the character properly (aka, staying true to canon personality and tendencies), or god-modding or metagaming by the player.
- * - Character heavily altered within site canon.
※ - Character received an upgrade. Their current abilities are not necessarily reflected in their original bio. Look HERE for more information. ~ - In spite of Mr. Jameson's persistent lobbying to the contrary, Spider-Man is classified as a hero. - The Staff

There has been a great deal of god-modding going on. It stops. This is the definition of god-modding, found by SuperChick. Read it, obey it.
Power Lusting Definition of Godmodding (or Godmoding) In an online RP, Godmodding is the term used for those whom create a character that is, virtually, indestructible. This is frowned upon by other members of the RPG and is extremely annoying. This can also result in a possible ban.
Godmodding in general Godmodding occurs when a player A describes an event, or a series of events he/she has taken against player B in the RP. The person who plays character B describes actions taken that completely nullify the original actions against them. For example: player A: "Joe strikes out at George firing a machine gun, launching a grenade at him and pulling down the walls around him." player B: "Joe completely misses George as he dodges the bullets, picks up the grenade and throws it back and jumps away from the falling walls." SOMETHING had to hurt the character, even if he only got shot in the shoulder or piled on by the wall and emerged with a broken wrist.
Godmodding is used like a "Get Out of Jail Free card" when things don't go the way a player wants. Rather than working with previously unfolded events, a player will godmod to get things going their way. It is used to make a certain character invincible.
Godmodding can also refer to where character A describes the outcome of their own actions AGAINST another character. For example, character A states: "George lashes at Joe with his sword, creating a huge gash in his cheek."
Controlling characters that ARE NOT YOURS to begin with is also godmodding.
Godmodding during fight scenes Godmodding is. most often, used during fight scenes. While it is hard to determine what another character will do, you must always leave the option open for them to dodge, duck, run, etc. You may not state your attack directly hit them and they fell down, or anything of that kind.
Godmodding and powerplaying/powergaming are, essentially, the same thing. In short, don't do it. It annoys other people and makes you look like a fool.

You are expected to know and understand what is written here. Ignorance of the rules is not an acceptable defense. 1. Respect one another. You may not like every player here, but we will not allow heated, nasty arguments, name-calling or public flaming (see Discord rules below). If this happens, you'll be BANNED. If you find yourself in a situation that you cannot resolve privately and peaceably through PMs, bring it to the Staff.2. Each member is to have only one account. It keeps things simpler. 3. You are allowed a number of characters, however, you must first earn them through your activity on the site. Below is a scale to show you the thresholds at which you earn your characters slots. Please notice that you could have either all canons or a combination of canons and original characters. Also note that just because you have the posts and the opportunity, it doesn't mean you are required to hold that many characters. It is entirely up to the player to determine how many characters they choose to play. Staff reserve the right to revoke the privilege of any player to hold these many canons. You may also lose them by not posting regularly.Upon joining, choose:
| 3 canons of any alignment and one canon villain or 2 canons of any alignment, 1 OC of any alignment and 1 canon villain. | 100 posts =
| 1 additional canon slot | 200 posts =
| 1 additional canon or 1 OC slot | 250 posts = | 1 additional canon villain slot | 300 posts = | 1 additional canon slot | 400 posts = | 1 additional canon or 1 OC slot | 500 posts = | 1 additional canon slot and 1 additional canon villain slot | 600 posts = | 1 additional canon or 1 OC slot | 700 posts = | 1 additional canon slot | 750 posts = | 1 additional canon villain slot | 800 posts = | 1 additional canon or 1 OC slot | 900 posts = | 1 additional canon slot | 1000 posts = | 2 additional canons slots and 1 canon villain slot, or 1 OC slot and 1 canon villain slot | 1200 posts = | 1 additional canon slot | 1400 posts = | 1 additional canon or 1 OC slot | 1600 posts = | 1 additional canon slot | 1800 posts = | 1 additional canon or 1 OC slot | 2000 posts = | 2 additional canon slots, or 2 OCs, or 1 canon and 1 OC | every add'l 1000 posts = | 1 additional canon or 1 OC slot |
- Overpowered Characters - No character will be ever permitted to be claimed who is inclined to do universe altering evil (such as destroy worlds, etc.) or has godlike powers (omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence). These banned canons will be given permission to be played only on a case-by-case basis inasmuch as they are required to fulfill a plot. The use of these canons will be permitted only at the discretion of staff and will be very limited.
Furthermore, canons who are deemed too overpowered to be played in full capacity in the game (too many powers, etc.) may need to be subdued in their power set in order to be accepted for RPG play. This is at the discretion of staff and may not always appear consistent since the staff is made up of different people, but we do and will continue to attempt to be fair. - Alternate Universe Characters - When you apply for a canon on this site, it must always be the 616 (main universe) version of the character. The player who controls the 616 version of a canon is also in charge of any and all AU versions of that canon for story purposes, but we ask that they be used very sparingly, if ever. If you want to bring in a character from another universe that would replace an existing 616 version of them (who is not already played in the RPG), then you need a very good reason for the crossover and a story behind their being in this universe to do so. However, NO Marvel Zombie Universe related characters will ever be permitted.
An exception to the general rule are certain characters who are technically AU versions of Marvel canons are considered by Marvel to be their own characters (such as Dark Beast of Earth-295). This is because they currently exist as exiles on Earth-616 itself. They can be apped as any other characters.
Canon Marvel characters from alternate universes who have no 616 equivalent may be allowed on a case by case basis (such as Miles Morales of Earth-1610) IF there is a very good reason for the crossover.
- Licensed Characters - Characters that are Marvel by license (such as Godzilla) are not allowed. Likewise, characters owned by Disney that are not considered Marvel (such as anything from Star Wars) are not allowed. This applies even if you can point to canon interactions. Characters that Marvel considers its own but which have their origins in licensed comics (such as Death's Head) are exempt as they are not considered licensed/non-Marvel.
- Villains - Over the decades, most Marvel comics characters have had a brush with the dark side at one point or another, and the pages of our favorite comics feature countless antiheroes that ride the line between good and bad. These character slots are intended for Marvel comics canons that leave little doubt about which side they're on. Eligibility for villain slot status will be decided by the mod team on a case-by-case basis, especially for characters where it's a bit murky. Characters in these slots will be generally expected to maintain an antagonistic role. Villain Examples: Red Skull, Magneto, Green Goblin, Doom, Enchantress.
- Pets - Some heroes have animal sidekicks that are basically a part of their character. These pets will be considered part of the character in question, and not temp or support. Example: Lockheed.
- Original Characters - Any character that you create needs to be something you would see specifically in the Marvel Earth 616 Universe. (For example, no zombies!) Also, if you are creating an original character, make sure you understand the meaning of "original." Do not just take a character from another universe (DC, manga, Disney, etc.) and try to fit them in here. Likewise, do not take a well-known code name or real name from Marvel or another universe. Use common sense here. Calling a character the Howler is fine; calling them Wonder Woman is not (or for that matter Diana Prince or some amalgam like Clark Wayne). Also keep in mind, we will not accept any original characters who have immense power (ie. greater than a canon with similar powers). More detailed OC rules can be found HERE.
- Dead Characters - If a canon you want is dead in the comics (before Civil War), PM a staff member to obtain permission to play them and have a plausible story line in mind that could reflect why they are not dead in the game.
4. To apply for a character, be sure to use the bio template and apply in the New Applications board. This applies to both canons and original characters. After posting a character you have 14 DAYS to complete it (in other words, it is not a "Work in Progress" or "Unfinished"). If it is not completed, it will be considered abandoned. Once your application is complete, a mod will check it for approval to begin playing. If your application was looked over and you were told to change something, you have 14 DAYS to do so or it will be considered abandoned. If more than one person is applying for a character, the first application properly done will be accepted. Designating an unfinished application as "Work In Progress" or "Unfinished" does NOT reserve that character for you. Priority depends on the date/time an application is completed, not started. You will know it is approved when it is locked. It will then be moved to the appropriate board.5. No god-modding, power-gaming or meta-gaming allowed. If you are caught once, you will be warned, caught twice, warned again, caught three times and you will be banned from playing. There just is no way we can have a good game if players godmod. For a full definition of god-modding, read this thread, but in a nutshell this means:
--Your character cannot be all powerful. --You cannot decide outcomes of his/her actions for other characters. (ex. Captain America hit Cyclops in the nose and his nose started bleeding.) --If your character gets into a fight, he can not dodge every blow. --Unless you have the permission of both Staff and the other player, you cannot kill a character. --Unless you have the other player's permission, you cannot read the other character's mind, or know things about that character that are not supposed to be known (such as a secret identity). 6. You can not kill a canon without pre-approval from Staff. No well-known canons will ever be permitted to be killed permanently.
7. We like to think this is an above average writing environment with above average writers. So, to meet this standard, no post should be less than 150 words. This does not include quoting parts of the posts of other members, or adding famous quotes/song lyrics.
8. Keep solo stories (threads where you are the only writer) in the Solo Board. No posts in the Solo Board should be less than 500 words. This does not include adding famous quotes/song lyrics.
9. Try to post as often as you can. Posting once a week per thread in which you involve your character(s) is sincerely preferable. On this subject:- If you don't post during a two week period, you could lose all of your canons and your OC's may be archived. Or if you do not sign an Activity Check, the same will apply.
- If you're going away, sign the Away Sheet on site or sign the Break Time channel on Discord so we know you'll be gone and when to expect you back. If you sign the do this then you will have time extensions for using your characters and becoming active again (not greater than one month). If no date is given for a return, the maximum time allotment before your canons are made available again is 2 weeks. (See above)
- Members who leave without signing the away sheet/Break Time or who consistently leave the site for periods of time will not be permitted to rejoin and simply request their previous canon characters be returned to them. ("Consistent absences" are generally defined as leaving the forum more than twice within a year, ofttimes leaving threads and other players hanging in the balance.)
- Terms of Probation:Terms of the probation will be determined in response to the specific circumstances and severity of the violation of our activity rules. After a 3 months probationary period, if the member remains consistent, then they may add further canons and OCs to their portfolio according to the slots provided by their post count (see above).
- If you apply for a canon, but do not post with them at all for the next 7 days after acceptance, then that character will be put back up for grabs.
10. If a member is inactive for one month, then their account could be deleted. (Anything deleted cannot be recovered.)
11. If you need a hero or villain in your thread and they are being actively played by someone, PM that person and politely request that they join your thread. Don't expect the player to know where their characters are needed without being informed. Other players are within their rights to decline an invitation and not everyone will be available (or desire) to play just because you ask. If this happens, find someone else to play.
12. TEMPING - If a canon character is needed in a thread, but we have no one currently playing them on the site, you may write for the character in question for the duration of one thread. If the canon is needed for more, ask a mod to temp them. In some cases, if a mod cannot help you, you will be granted the permission of an extension for the temporary play of a canon. Further guidelines for temping a canon are as follows:- Is the canon necessary for your story? (Don't casually temp canons without cause or purpose.)
- If the canon you want to temp is a very powerful &/or popular canon, please get permission before temping them - even for one thread.
- Anything written for a temp'ed character becomes RPG canon for them, so use of a canon in a way that severely alters their comic history or character will not be permitted.
- Use by one player of more than two unapproved (un-app'ed) canons at the same time (even if it's done in different threads) is strictly prohibited.
13. Please specify at the top of the thread when the thread if it is OPEN, CLOSED or INVITE ONLY. If a thread fails to say, then it is considered OPEN.
14. Please write all stories in third person, past tense.
15. You can be in more than one thread at once. You can also be in more than one battlefield at once. You don't have to follow a strict, streaming time line by finishing one thread before you begin another as long as you know what happens in your character's' respective stories. Also, threads don't always have to go according to the comics, and shouldn't. This is fictional writing and you are taking a hero/villain into a parallel dimension. Think of this RPG as dimension Earth 616.2! The official designation is MRH-616.
16. Lastly, although it shouldn't have to be said, let us remind you: Plagiarism is NOT permitted. Cite your sources, whether they be in you application for a character or your posts. If you are caught plagiarizing someone else's work, you will be reproached and given the option of a public apology to the members of the forum or a permanent ban. A second offense will receive no such offer and no warning will be given. You will simply be banned. *** There shall be no posts that break the TOS agreement set by ProBoards. Don't write beyond what you would see in the comics and keep your images clean.*** Discord Rules - Show respect to others! Obviously our first and most important rule on the site as we already listed it once. If someone is offended by what you are talking about, change the topic. Don't insult others for their opinions, plots, or role playing abilities. Do not harass them, call them names, or generally dress them down in public. Do not bully. If this happens, you will be banned from the Discord server. Keep your feedback constructive and your interactions kind.
- Retaliation is not permitted. As the saying goes, two wrongs do not make a right. Just take a screenshot and send your concerns to a mod to handle it.
- Don't try to break the filters. They are in place to keep the majority of our members and visitors from being offended by excessive cursing.
- Keep sexually explicit material from being discussed in the public channels. Seriously, take it to PM. Innuendo is fine, joking and teasing using vague references is fine, but do us all a favor and don't conduct cybersex sessions in the box. We have members of all ages in here. Think of the children!
- If you troll or spam the server with unwanted, repetitive messages of nonsense you will be warned, then (if you continue) you will be banned.
- Do not advertise other websites or forums in channels not specifically set up for that. We have an advertising board set up for this and that's where they go.
If you don't understand a rule listed here, please PM the admin for further explanation.
