Gambit had more scheming and more planning to do before his next move. This one had to be extremely carefully done though, since it involved people who knew him far better than almost anyone and would be able to predict him more than he liked when he was pulling a heist.
At least he hoped he was dealing with people who knew him. Finding out was the point of this mission, after all. There was one person he absolutely had to be able to trust if he was going to be able to carry on with this isolation much longer. One person who he simply needed to know was real, who was who they were meant to be.
He needed to see Rogue.
Maybe he couldn't speak to her just yet, nor even let her see him. Not until he had his answer and could think his next move through a bit more thoroughly. But he and Anne-Marie had had times when they'd been less close due to whatever reason (usually his own poor decisions) and he'd had to love her from a distance. He could tolerate a little longer.
He wasn't particularly technologically gifted, at least not by the standards of some of his colleagues like Beast and Forge, but by the standards of ordinary people he was more than capable. This meant that he was able to figure out combining and modifying some of Fury's gadgets without too much trouble. Using the second of the three strands of the hair he'd plucked from the head of the truth-teller a while back, he had another device that would be able to verify a single truth. But this one was built for one specific truth, a fixed question that he would be able to ask more than once. 'Is this person Anne-Marie?'
For the first time, he didn't want to risk a face to face with her, naturally. This would be too much of a risk if she wasn't really her. And if she wasn't, he wanted no risk of being exposed as knowing, and lets face it, he was possibly on the Skrulls' radar by now. Better to avoid them in general, which meant avoiding almost everyone in general. No, this was a case of infiltrating the X-mansion, get a strand of Rogue's hair from her room, and scan that to see if it passed the test.
For a master thief like Gambit, infiltrating a building that he'd played a big part in designing the security systems of was child's play. Even when it was a building populated by multiple powerful telepaths, this only slightly raised the difficulty. Admittedly his powers making it harder for telepaths to pick up his mind was a part of this, but he'd take any advantage he could.
A few days of watching the mansion from far enough away that there was little risk of being detected, and he had himself updated on everyone currently living at the mansion, their regular movements, and all the usual information that was less boring to acquire than usual as it was the people he thought of as a family.
Stealing first into the mansion grounds, then the mansion itself and finally Anne-Marie's room, he found her hairbrush, plucking a single strand of hair from it and feeding it into his device, whereupon a current was applied across it and through the other thread of hair which comprised a part of the mechanism. A pair of lights both lit up, indicating a confirmation of the DNA matching the records from Rogue's SRA file.
She wasn't an impostor!
That meant he needed to work out what to do next, not just for his mission, but for 'them'. For now he had to get out of there. Within moments then, he was gone. But not without a small trace of his presence being left behind.
On Rogue's pillow was a pair of playing cards. The Jack of Diamonds, and the Queen of Hearts.

Direct hit! Woohoo! She'd not gotten into a real fight for a long time, not even in the Danger Room. Not since before her death, and she realised just how much she'd missed it. This was something she'd worry about later, since she'd never enjoyed it beforehand, but the bloodlust she dealt with constantly could at least be sated a little bit this way, which was a lot better than the alternative method.
As the Wolverine wannabe went flying, Jubilee's energy stream was paused when she heard Kurt's words. That had been why they were there, after all. To get Logan to safety. She'd gotten them enough time for Kurt to Bamf them out of there, if that was all she needed to do then she'd be only too happy to get back to the mansion and start the process of catching up with the man who'd been as good as a father to her and away for quite literally a lifetime.
Moving backwards while keeping her eyes on Daken, ready to blast him again if he looked like he would be coming at them again before their departure, she headed towards Logan and Kurt, soon within arm's reach of the both of them and ready for Nightcrawler to do what he was the best at.

Completely changing his train of thought had been exactly as easy as she'd expected it to be. Teenage boys were remarkably predictable in certain respects. Girls too, for that matter, they were just better at hiding it for the most part. But this would make it extremely easy to perceive any further changes in his mental equilibrium, possibly leading to better insight to their cause. Telepathy, a communication device hidden well enough that she hadn't spotted it, possession, many possibilities existed. Though from what she'd read about Ghost Riders, there was very little capable of possessing one, and any such being would likely be classed as an All Avengers threat, possibly even an Omega threat. That would probably cause problems that might need resolving before any second date.
The choice of what to eat was then firmly pushed back upon her, it seemed likely to be a manners based lack of decision making on his part though. She resolved to educate him on the counterproductive nature of such things, but later. For now...
Jeanne glanced round the food court, taking only a fraction of a second to process queue lengths, staffing levels behind various counters, and to balance against her opinions of the various brands before guiding Robbie over to the queue for one of the mid tier burger chains, reasonable quality food but usually much faster service. Sure enough the queue moved quickly and they were soon being served, Jeanne ordering a simple chicken burger and a drink for herself, producing a Stark funded debit card with a reasonable income to cover her living expenses, whereupon she looked over to Robbie for his order.

Some of the first lessons Jeanne had had as Finesse was defending her mind against attack by telepaths. Part of those lessons included recognising the signs in others, and Robbie's sudden flash of pain, followed by apparent distraction, an unfocused look in his eyes followed by a sudden change of his mind regarding contacting others to learn more about Ghost Riders, and instead changing the subject.
Finesse automatically began running through her standard mental defence routines as a precaution, but sensed no intrusion into her own mind. Indeed it seemed that Robbie was no longer exhibiting signs of any outside influence, only elevated levels of fear, pain and the associated surge of adrenaline that came with such things. Definitely something to keep an eye on and about which to consult the various experts available to her. Was this normal for a Ghost Rider? None of the data available to her suggested such things, but then few were as perceptive as she was. She required far more data, and it simply might not exist.
As her mind began to relax slightly, she permitted a little more consideration of how she should respond to Robbie's non-committal response to her question, quickly settling on a course of action that would hopefully distract Robbie from whatever his lingering fears were about. Her pragmatic world view and somewhat different emotional responses to many ideas and activities meant there was one option virtually guaranteed to work, which fortunately she'd been hoping to do anyway.
Turning herself round to be fully face to face to him, she moved in close for a brief kiss. After she removed her lips from his, she smiled softly, her arms still around him for now, and took a few seconds before she spoke. "First place we find, then."
She moved back to his side so they could walk on, but not with her hand in his. Now, her arm was around his waist. He was quite attractive, had many qualities common to a considerate partner, and keeping close to him was a good way to both observe his behaviour more extensively, and to have a reason to enjoy his company further. Hopefully there'd be subtle clues as to the cause of his troubles, so she'd be able to resolve them efficiently so they could focus on their relationship once more. The realisation that she'd already mentally defined it as a 'relationship' surprised her, something she'd take several hours to think about later.

It was getting quite clear that this was more than simple modesty, well past self deprecation and playing up the talents of his more intellectual spandex favouring colleagues. No, this was some kind of self hatred of the kind that Gabby had wallowed in for quite a few months after The Accident which had claimed the lives of her father and brother, and merely left her in a wheelchair. Survivor's Guilt had been very quickly diagnosed once she'd begun therapy, but she wasn't sure exactly what Dr Pym's apparent issue was. She'd need to know him far better to even begin to take a guess.
There was one thing she could diagnose at least. The difference between the mindset of Opus, and of Ultron. She'd had plenty of time to consider this so it was a far better researched subject. "You created Ultron with one absolute task, yes? You created a machine with an imperative that could only be accomplished in one way. I didn't create a machine. I created life. Opus has no absolute imperatives beyond 'no destroying all life'. How she goes about literally anything else is up to her, but she cannot do anything that a moderately competent human hacker couldn't either. And if she did try to end all life on the planet? She'd put an end to our Nintendo evenings. She loves games night. You're welcome to join us any time."
The fact that she'd just kind of asked a founding Avenger and the finest scientist in the world on a date escaped her, though when she realised later, she'd no doubt wonder what she'd even meant by the offer.
Then he vanished.
Well, not quite, but until her eyes adjusted and she felt the slight movement on her arm it seemed like he had. She giggled at the realisation, stopping suddenly with a awestruck expression.
"Particles! It's not 'the Pym Particle', it's particles! There's more than one, am I right?"

Jeanne had expected a positive response to her mentioning the expertise of Dr Strange, but then it seemed the name wasn't one that Robbie had even heard of. Given the fame of the Sorcerer Supreme within the superhero community, this spoke volumes of how poorly connected this Ghost Rider was. To Jeanne's eternal thirst for knowledge, this was something she almost pitied. But if she sought to learn everything, it wasn't to keep all that knowledge to herself - she could share it with others as well.
"Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme, a master of the mystic arts with more knowledge about magic than anyone, so it is claimed. He also has an extensive library in which he can research anything he does not personally know. He is the most likely person of anyone I have knowledge of to be able to help you learn more about your... alter ego."
When he spoke of other Ghost Riders, Jeanne couldn't help but notice various micro-expressions indicating a sudden surge of anger and fear. It was well concealed, and not in response to anything specific she could determine given the timing was off for it to have been in response to his own words. But something was causing him alarm and this wasn't the first time she'd noticed unexplained emotional turmoil in him. Was this a Ghost Rider thing, or was it a problem that was unique to Robbie? No easy way to tell was apparent, so best to simply keep observing for now.
"I do not know any identities, though I could probably get messages sent on to your... colleagues. I am sure that someone in the Avengers has means of contacting them and would be willing to do so. I cannot guarantee any response of course, but I can perform my own research in the meantime, see if I can uncover more about the Ghost Riders from publicly available information, or from the less restricted Avengers files."
Truth be told, she had already begun doing so simply to learn more about Robbie's capabilities. Now that it seemed to have more importance than satisfying her baseline levels of curiosity though, it would be given a higher priority.
The only remaining issue for her was his question of food or shopping first. Given that both of them were in excellent physical condition it seemed unlikely that carrying a small amount of acquisitions would trouble either of them. Therefore it seemed likely that he was hungry but did not want to voice a preference of his own in case it upset her. An easily solved issue if so, since it made little difference to her what order they did things in. She moved not in the direction of the drug store, but the also fairly nearby food court. She didn't eat fast food very often, but it was a pleasant change from the remarkably bland if nutritious fare at Avengers mansion. Still, nothing in New York was as good as the In-N-Out burgers from back in California, she felt. "Anything you'd prefer, or shall we just go with whatever has a short queue?"

Trapped in a net with what seemed to be a teenage robot that STILL hadn't introduced herself, Verity found the whole situation to be annoying beyond belief. She'd just wanted a quiet hour or so in comparatively fresh air and peace and quiet to read her book, and now she was looking at the rest of the day captured by a lying robot that hadn't even had the sense to not kill itself because she told it to. If there was a less likely way the day could have gone, she dreaded to think what it might have been.
The arrival of another teenage girl - this one human, sparkling and airborne - was by this point just another mildly unusual thing by comparison. The girl's uniform had an 'X' logo prominently on the belt, one which even Verity knew indicated the X-Men. Why she was arriving out of nowhere she had no idea, but since she seemed to be there to help, there would be no complaints from her.
The newcomer swooped down in front of them and hovered a few inches above the ground as she cheerily addressed the gynoid. "Hi. Viv, right? I've seen your picture from some of the other Champions. I'm Marie, or Glitter if you prefer. I got a text saying you needed help. Big destroyed Sentinel, one of their energy nets around you... Stopping you phasing out, right? Give me a moment..."
She finally settled down onto the ground, her sparkling aura not fading as she reached out to touch the net, which began sparkling in turn and... vanished.
"There! Anything else I can help with? I've encountered a few of those Sentinels, so I'm always happy to help anyone else they've attacked."

The super-identity was a difficult thing. On one hand you needed to 'build a brand' as she'd once heard it called, but on the other was the Shakespearean 'what's in a name?'. As long as people knew who you were, what did it matter if they called you 'Finesse', 'Ninja Librarian', or 'Panda Girl'? Your reputation remained the same whatever label was put upon that. Dr Pym seemed to reinvent himself frequently, as did a few others in the community, and their 'self' was... actually slightly changed each time. Maybe this called for more thorough study and consideration...
"If you are content to be a Ghost Rider, one with the distinction of a car instead of a motorbike, then the identity seems to have chosen you as much as you choose to use the name. Perhaps Doctor Strange might be able to offer some insight towards the matter if you seek further advice."
Magic was a poorly understood subject for almost all except actual magic users, this much was clear. When it came to a magical being of the status of a Ghost Rider, Jeanne would naturally suggest the best expert she knew of on a subject. There were others out there who might be better suited, but if so she'd not heard of them, or at the very least didn't have their contact details.
Robbie's reaction to her minor demonstration of her potential got a brief smile from her, one which perhaps seemed a little at odds with the statement he'd made. Jeanne was not one to approve of someone concealing their true thoughts though, and at least it seemed like he understood her a little better than most she'd spoken to this much.
"I am probably the most dangerous person you will ever meet. I might not be able to destroy a building with a single blow, but I could in theory destroy cities or even countries if I so desired. I could ruin a person's reputation and every aspect of their life, in a way that they would never know I was even involved. Similarly I can use those same insights to manipulate things in more positive directions. But those hold no interest for me either. I would rather people live their own lives, and I can just watch out for anyone else out there less... restrained than I am."
By this point they were at the entrance to the mall, and Jeanne glanced at the large map indicating the location of several of the larger stores nearby. "Drug store nearby, there first and then find something to eat?"

So it really was the South Pole, and somewhere called the 'Savage Land'? This walking avatar of morbid obesity might as well have just been saying random words for all the plausibility Nico could find in them. Antarctic jungle filled with Jurassic Park, Tarzan and the bad guy from the Lord Of The Rings movies? But not Santa as well? She wasn't sure whether to just call him a liar outright or to give him the benefit of the doubt given the telepathic dinosaur from the future that was (kind of) the pet of her group of friends. The animal people, though? That was at least a little closer to the normality of life in New York with its spandex clad citizens, even if she'd not heard of a Doctor Minnow. Presumably the decent animals were already taken. "Fish man doctor and other animals, right. I'll watch out for... just about everything, by the sounds of it."As they all went through the aperture into the jungle one by one, the Portal Girl turned to ask Nico a question, one which she couldn't help but wonder if it was a test or something. "The magic I was using earlier, for a start. You're the one that was using those portals, yes?"Klara seemed to be delighted with their surroundings, which Nico couldn't help but smile slightly at. That kind of joy was far too infrequent for their little group and she wasn't going to do anything to distract her from it. As the youngest Runaway ran off down her self forming path, Nico strode out after her. "This way, it seems. Klara around plants, she knows what she's talking about."Her grip on the Staff Of One remained firm though. Maybe Klara was in her element, but there were still dangerous monsters out there that might attack at any moment. Or the various other menaces that may or may not exist... zania

Jeanne simply shrugged at this. They were essentially talking about semantics and equally meaningless trivialities, after all. "You know my name, that much was clear. Anyone able to overhear us will also know my name. Whether you say it or not, nothing changes. My mindset is one others have called 'Cold logic', though in truth I simply do not allow emotional responses to dictate my actions."
The shift of focus in the conversation to Robbie was predictable, albeit mildly inconvenient since she would have to remain careful about what she said to preserve his anonymity. Whilst it seemed very likely the Avengers knew who he was already, she was not going to hand his identity over through carelessness. She'd deduced it with great ease and there were a few intellects in the Avengers she believed capable of doing the same, but unless they asked her directly, they'd have to work it out for themselves.
"I am separated from most others my age by my 'different' mentality. I do not understand emotions in the way that almost any normal person does, even though I comprehend the principles of psychology as well as a qualified professional. My friend is... similarly distanced from those who would commonly be considered their peers. We have different circumstances, but a similar consequence of them. We are both outsiders, and whilst we are no closer to each other than anyone else, we can at least understand a little more how the other feels about it."
Hopefully Robbie's sense of self worth would improve enough that he'd accept the invitation to the Avengers Academy she was sure she'd be able to secure him, but whatever it was that seemed to be holding him back in that respect Jeanne still hadn't figured out, let alone overcome. Why it mattered to her so much, she still didn't fully understand. She'd need a lot more time around him before that enigma of a social connection began to make any sense to her.

Cute was a concept that Jeanne was aware of, indeed able to intellectually evaluate, but not something she particularly registered automatically. True, she liked 'cute' things, but did not think of them as cute until she gave it deliberate thought. As such, she shrugged when she replied to Robbie. "Perhaps, but they also have significant claws and powerful teeth. A great many people get injured in both zoos and the wild when they forget the 'bear' part. Nobody ever tries to cuddle a Grizzly."
The reflection on whether the name 'Panda Girl' would be a viable identity for anyone in the super powered world didn't take long, as there were enough animal themed individuals out there with non threatening identities that 'Panda' seemed a better choice than many.
Ghost Rider, though? Perhaps he didn't like all the baggage that came with it, but that was simple to resolve. She smiled a brief grin as she responded "Then why not 'Ghost Driver' or something similar? Clear evocation of the same imagery, but since you prefer a car over the motorbike favoured by the majority of your peers it seems more accurate and has the advantage of distinguishing you from them. Alternative synonyms would fine tune the concept to your preferred identity."
The reaction to her casual declaration of effortless learning was little different to most people their age finding out just how capable she was in that respect, and she found herself repeating that which had been said a great many times before. "Not just physical, perfect recall of any information or experiences. Cooking would not be as easily learned as you seem to think, since it depends on external factors such as variations in the ingredients, minor fluctuations in the heat transfer during the cooking, and so on. It would be faster for me, but not effortless.
I would remember the recipes perfectly after reading them once, just as easily as I remember passing you and Gabe at the Santa Monica Place mall four years ago on a Saturday in May. He was reading a Ninja Wolf comic whilst you were pushing him in his wheelchair and talking to him. I can remember each word you said, and each 'Hmm' he responded with for the brief period you were both within earshot of me."
This was the true strength of her abilities. Not being able to break someone's neck with a thrown toothpick from across the street, but to remember everything, without exception. This gave her more potential for learning, but also for knowing about people, their habits, likes, dislikes, and so many other little things that most would not even think significant until it was too late. The fact that nobody had yet shown any fear of what she was capable of indicated none understood it...

There seemed to be a lot to the 'code name' thing. A bad one could ruin any image regardless of how capable or powerful a person was. She knew of The Trapster and how he'd been 'Paste Pot Pete' for a long time before realising how ridiculous it was. Maybe Stilt Man would similarly change his name eventually...
"Indeed. It conveys what I want it to, and I am glad it was chosen for me as it shows my instructors knew me well, even so early on. And as for yourself? Ghost Rider is a sort of inherited title, for want of a better expression, but it comes with a big boost to your reputation which I'm sure is useful for intimidating those who know what a Ghost Rider is. Few names would suit the mystic form and retain any sense of the immense power. 'Hot Head' is a well known expression, but about as intimidating as 'Panda Girl', which Spider-Man once suggested as an alternative for me, based on the black and white of my costume. Though Pandas are actually very dangerous despite their appearance. Which is true about myself as well, so maybe he was a lot more perceptive than anyone gives him credit for."
It was rare for her to talk so extensively with someone in a purely social situation, but she felt far more relaxed and at ease with Robbie than she'd experienced before, particularly so quickly after getting to know them. His continual looking around, even upwards, signalled his desire for the kind of excitement which was nearly unique to New York, and a part of both of their lives. His question though? This was where she found out if he was likely to like her for herself. "Yesterday I learned Swedish and how to play the clarinet. I do little except learn new things, which is a part of why I feel little connection to the others at the Academy."
In the distance down the street she could already make out the entrance to the mall, greatly assisted by both her excellent vision and the knowledge of what she was looking for. More thought was given to what they'd actually do once there though, since he seemed to be indicating his preference for her to take the lead on this excursion.
"My current plan is to explore the mall at a steady place, and either get something to eat or get the first aid kit materials, whichever opportunity presents itself first. Once those two are dealt with continue exploring until something catches our attention. Though 'no battle plan survives contact with the enemy'. We can adapt to the unexpected when it happens."

The concept of a power dynamic was one that Jeanne was of course familiar with. She almost certainly knew the theory of psychology better than this doctor did. It was only lack of experience that prevented her from being better at it. Well, that and an almost total lack of natural empathy. If she stopped to think she could anticipate emotional reactions with at least some accuracy, even if it was still woefully short of that of an ordinary person. Sometimes superpowers could be over-rated.
"You knew my family name, it would be incredibly unlikely that you did not already know my given name also. The Avengers will have checked your background exceedingly thoroughly before retaining your services for this meeting, especially so given the very few qualified individuals in your field with any experience of superhumans. As you have observed, secret identities are generally a closely guarded secret."
The opening question was a good one, of course. She'd expect nothing less from anyone in this sort of situation. Clearly it was designed to get her to open up on her own terms. Jeanne knew enough psychology to likely obfuscate any real insights from her answers, but then her instructors knew this, which meant that this 'Leyla' presumably did too, and would likely be able to make deductions accordingly, and would likely be far better at unravelling any emotional aspects than Jeanne. So... best to simply be honest, even if she wasn't sure if she was ready to share everything just yet. Not least because she wasn't even sure what she thought about it all.
"I am learning a lot. I'm sure you've read my file, you know how important that is to me. But I'm also... enjoying the occasional field work, mostly unplanned, that I've been involved in. I confess I would not have anticipated such a pleasure derived from what most call heroics. I am... even experimenting with an ongoing social association with an individual I met during one such outing. More than once my instructors have encouraged me to interact more with others on a social basis, but most times have felt largely tedious and wastes of time, as I have little in common with most of my peers. Neither does my new... friend."
She was being vague of course, to avoid revealing any details about who it was she was talking about. It was probably possible that the Avengers would be able to work it out if they really wanted to, but she was certainly not going to hand over someone else's secret identity without an exceptionally good reason.

The description of her by her classmates was one that she'd always understood simply because her knowledge and recall skills meant that to an average person she might as well be all knowing - she considered herself lucky they'd decided on librarian, a profession she respected, and not something her peers were more familiar with of 'the internet'. The 'ninja' part was one that could be applied to a great many of the heroes - trainee and otherwise - they knew. Overall it could have been a lot less tolerable a nickname.
"Finesse was a name chosen by my instructors. I feel it suits me for now, if that changes I would consider changing to something else. It would depend on what I had become at that point, of course."
As Robbie said they could go now, she rose once more from her seat and began fastening her jacket's buttons before placing her empty cup on the end of the counter for the staff to clear away - Jeanne knew that being considerate to people in service roles was simple, cost her nothing, and ensured a good impression resulting in a good chance of better service next time she visited.
"Let's go, then. I don't get to see 'normal life' much, I am sure we will both enjoy this."
With that she moved towards the door of the coffee shop and once outside reached a hand out for Robbie's as they walked side by side.
