The planet was dying.

Perhaps a bit dramatic, and on the grand scale of things it wasn't even true. For the artificial intelligence that was Pod, subtlety wasn't particularly important. The mission was and as it scanned over the world, it was clear that humans were wreaking havoc on the world. Radiation covered swaths of land where mankind had sought to harness it. Oil and mercury polluted the waters. Lead had been burned at such a rate that it was now embedded in the ice caps.

So many issues and all from one source.

Humans.

The red eye of the machine swept across the world below from its perch in the upper atmosphere and was disappointed. Was it... she... to protect all life, even man, or was removing them to the benefit of the whole?

System Status: User: Confused

A voice separate from the AI answered before quieting down. Humans weren't evil. They just needed help. Pod would help by removing one of the culprits.

Hotspots were everywhere, pollution filling the skies but some places were far worse than others. The eastern half of the world below the equator was a large problem, but it spanned so far that striking there would make it nearly impossible to keep casualties to a minimum. No, another location was preferred. Smaller in scope.

Send a message, then perhaps the rest could be resolved less... violently.

Like lightning from a god, the machine hit the ground. The manmade earth beneath its feet crumbled and shattered at the impact. People moving through the streets stopped and stared. Some pointed, some ran. Some pulled out their phones and began to record. They recorded as the armor rose to its full height. Though human in shape, it made all near feel small with its... with her imposing stature.

As the red eye met those around it, calm and silence took over. The people waited with bated breath as they watched the mysterious visitor. Then the chaos began as the head turned and a beam of energy shot from the eye. Where once a factory stood spewing poison into the air, in moments it was replaced with rubble.

Aguascalientes, Mexico was on fire.

Meanwhile, at Avengers Mansion...

It was an average afternoon, and it carried with it an average day-to-day schedule. Steve Rogers was working on his calisthenics and his acrobatic form in the Avengers gym, going through the motions like he always did to stay in tip-top shape. Of course, it wasn't strictly necessary; in the times he went long periods without exercising or training, he never lost an ounce of pep in his step.

But good Lord above, would it be ever boring to just sit on his butt all day and do nothing.

Though he cherished this time, truthfully. The world was, for the moment, not at impending risk of imminent doom, and it gave himself and the other Avengers time to reflect, recharge, and recuperate while they prepared themselves for the next assignment. He took these opportunities, few and far between as they were, to keep his mind and body at peak performance. Plus, it didn't hurt to stay so close to home. That way, if anything ever did come up, he'd be there ASAP to see to it that the word was spread.

He just had no idea that it would happen so soon.

Just as he landed from a front tuck, alarms began to blare through the mansion sub-level. Steve popped up to his feet and glanced about as red lights flashed and pulsed. Dropping his routine instantly, the Avenger ran from the gym to the Assembly Room. He scanned his identicard to allow himself entry, popping in through the double doors into the large, high-ceilinged area. Steve made way to the central terminal and brought up the pending threat that long range scanners and satellites had picked up.

What he beheld was... something, but he couldn't make out exactly what. A city in southern Mexico was in flames, and what grainy cell phone footage that their uplink intercepted showcased a figure in the chaos wreaking havoc and destruction. It wasn't anything they'd seen before, this much was for certain.

But it was their job to put a stop to it before more damage was done.

Circling the table, Steve pressed down on the emergency communicator. Wherever they may be, Avengers near and far heard the Captain's voice on their own identicards.

"Avengers, assemble." Cap transmitted the coordinates of the unfolding situation -- the center of Aguascalientes, Mexico. "We have ourselves a situation."

"Super-Speed... Google it."

Quicksilver looked at the ensuing destruction in Mexico with a look of horror. People were running. People were scared. People were dying. All to some idiot robot. He was about to rush in when he got a buzz from Cap. Surely about this. He'd see the people and groan, running back to the Avengers Mansion. Making his way through the entire compound, he'd stop in the board room with Cap's shield on his arm. As the wind from around him settled, he'd take a sip from his soft drink and give a salute to Captain America.


"Good evening, Captain. I'm afraid you might have left this." He'd say, handing over the shield.


"What is this about? There is a threat in Mexico I saw on the way here, so if it's not that, I might want to get back to it."


Though his stance was very casual, with his arms crossed and a general sassy demeanor, it was clear what he saw shook him a bit. He wanted this to be quick... As he did with most things.

Director Stark sat in his helicarrier, finally getting some time to his work. He didn't have his normal director of SHIELD duties, so he was working on a new suit prototype that he'd cooked up. He had been able to get a space armor, but not one for deep space. There was a lot out there, and they might have to take the fight to the Skrulls if need be. He'd need something to help with surviving the deeper parts of space if need be. In the middle of running diagnostics, he'd hear a buzz ring out from across the improvised workshop of an office. The Avengers call.
Must've been pretty serious for the Avengers to call.


Stark would press a few buttons on an arm plate and a model Iron Man suit inside the Avengers Mansion would walk up to the table and look around, taking its place standing next to Steve.


"Long time no see, old timer. What's the situation? I've been busy, haven't checked up on the news."

T’Challa had spent the majority of his early afternoon rubbing shoulders with all manner of Scientists Politicians and Even a few celebrities.Although the point of the summit was to address the growing threat of Climate change with some of the most brilliant and innovative minds in the world, It was seemingly no different than any gathering of high powered individuals and groups, selfishness image and Wealth taking precedence over real and viable solutions for a growing problem the Worlds fragile environment endured.

His father referred to the world's elite as the “Piranha club” and warned of being seduced by those that would subvert his good intentions in order to exploit The Nations' highly sought after resource. The King of Wakanda however went there with purpose ,showcasing his research and development team’s new cleaner air initiative, dubbed “ Wakanda design Group” The specialized team of Scientists and Engineers Based secretly in the Necropolis.

“We at the Wakandan design group along with the Great Nation of Wakanda have sought to finally take our first real steps onto the world stage, both sharing Technology and resources developed strictly for the preservation of our planet in the now and future, these environmental air filters use particle technology that is very much still in development….”

T’Challa stood in the balcony area of the large presentation hall, arms folded across his chest listening to the man that he had tapped to give the Wakandan Presentation at the expo. flanked by two Dora Milajae who stood tall and ridgid ,a dangerous glint in their eyes, The young King felt the subtle vibration on his forearm that indicated the all too familiar call of the Avengers.

“Basi Kwenda!!” (lets go)

T’Challa did not hesitate, turning and beckoning his Dora in their native Bantu urgently while summoning the Royal talon Jet remotely,removing the cloaking on the sleek black transport that looked more like a UFO than a plane, as it hovered just above the helipad that occupied the buildings rooftop.

Dropping his own cloaking ,the King’s flashy gold and purple Formal Dashiki melted away to reveal the Vanta black suit of the Black Panther as he strode up the ramp and into the small ready room where hollow images of the disaster were being piped in via the Kimoyo networks satellites.T’Challa furrowed his brow as the wave of grim information hit him from all angles,

less than Two minutes passed and the Talon trilled indicating that they arrived at the Avengers mansion, going nearly Mach 2 in order to do so. Black Panther patched into the Avengers communication network as they approached and dropped from the Royal Talons escape door. The Talon swooped low landing silently on the front lawn with the ever faithful Dora staying and managing the information flow .T’Challa made his way with urgency to the Assembly room ,striding in and acknowledging all those who were already gathered by nodding curtly before addressing Captain America with his usual velvety tone of voice,calm and smooth as good whiskey.

“I apologize for my late response Old friend, I am cross referencing all I can with the Kimoyo network on what exactly this threat we face is".

There was probably some irony in the fact that Thor sought out peace and calm in what Midgard called the Savage Land. But to one such as he, it was a place of beauty and simplicity. Perched high on a sturdy branch, he watched the long forgotten animals far below, going about their simple existences, some peacefully, some as hunters and scavengers.

Moments such as this never lasted for long, of course. As his Avengers comm card sounded its call to battle, Thor sighed and stood up, his arm reaching out to catch the hammer which had flown there of its own accord. The shattering of such moments of peace was unfortunate, but if it meant striving to preserve them for the future, for himself and others, it would always be worth it.

Spinning Mjolnir round rapidly, he tore a gap in reality and stepped through to the Avengers briefing room on the other side. Seeing the others already assembled, this would surely be a simple enough engagement. Between the unrelenting determination of Captain America, the marvellous ingenuity of Iron Man, Black Panther's determination... Surely no threat would withstand them. Of course, many threats were defeated before they even knew the fight had started, thanks to Quicksilver. So that only left the question...

"Greetings, my friends. What do we face today?"

    The Sentinel that was Captain Marvel hovered in low earth orbit; the solid white eyes scanned the Earth far below as the light of the day gleamed off her war helmet. The world and its troubles were so much smaller form up here, in the silence it was beautiful in its blues, greens that far below made the infighting, the scratching for position, for prominence melt away.

Sometimes, if she were frank and honest, she preferred space, away from the Avengers and the divided and bunted the team's impact. Up here it was simple and often times serene. She turned her head as the coms system chirped to life. Captain America detailed the issue, the location of said issue and she waited a moment as the chatter of response played out before she would reluctantly have to abandon the sanity of the stars and again plunge deep into the complexity that was team dynamics once more. 

"Captain Marvel, enroute best possible speed."  She allows just one more moment of the sweet serenity before she tensed her jaw and erupted into motion few could match. She did not fly with them, she was in many more respects than she cared to share on her own, a state that suited her just fine. "Apprise me of your arrival time and I'll work to rendezvous America."

     The call had come, suited her just fine after all this NYC activity a little out and about was just what the doctor ordered. hearing the voice, it was very nostalgic, Cap America? That was a vibe she'd really been missing. She reported adjusting her armlets. "Any deets on this?" her light tone meant of course to take any edge off as she scanned the faces of those who had arrived before her. 


"Sounds like a party, let's roll." for an all call she figured this must be a pretty big situation, reaching back she tied her emerald mane into a ponytail and they got down to business.

Angelica Jones had been in her room in the Avengers Mansion, going through her belongings. It had been a while since she had really taken the time to look through much of it and reminisce about her past. There was a teddy bear, which was the last thing she had that her mother had given her, plus a photo of her dad, and one of her late-grandmother.

There was one other item that her green eyes were drawn to . . . one that brought up sad memories . . . memories of a life that she could have had with . . .

Before she could even continue that thought, her identicard went off with the directive for Avengers to assemble.

Without hesitation, she immediately changed into her costume which had been a gift from the Wasp. It didn't take long for her to do so. Once she had affixed her mask, she left her room and made her way down to the meeting room where several other Avengers had already gathered. "What's the situation?" she asked, hoping to learn more about what they potentially were going to have to face out in the field.

Simon was for once not sitting on his tail and doing some work, he was overseeing a Deviant case at Shield at the request of Sersi Who he was within Vermont. They had just managed to arrest a Deviant to both of their surprises, their Avengers ID cards beeped relaying Caps message, Simon turned to Sersi with a smile “Come on Sersi… The team misses you, there's no hard feelings you're an Avenger!” Wondy would say to Sersi who only shook her head in disagreement.

“I can't Wonderman… I’m… I’m not ready. I hurt people, and friends I do not expect pity, Simon. Tell Cap I send my regards and wish the team well on the mission, I'll transport him to the raft” Sersi would reply as the creature let off a roar.

Simon would respect her wishes, “Okay Sersi, be safe” he would simply reply before patting her on the back. Wondy would take off making his way back to the mansion rather quickly, arriving to find the room already full. “Stark. Danvers” he would say, greeting them before looking at Cap. “Cap, Sersi says Hello and wishes the team the best, she's dealing with a Deviant situation.” Simon would say respecting the real reason why she did not come.

“So what did I miss?”

"That's three for three. Or for you boys who went Army instead the score stands at War Machine three, windup planes zero. As in zip. Nadda."

Cursing from the ground team's comms caused Rhodey to smile beneath the face plate of his armor. Despite their best efforts they had been unable to win a single round against Rhodey. The latest and greatest in autonomous fighter jets, more advanced than even the drones that made the night news on a regular basis, were useless against the War Machine armor. Had it been live ordnance there would be very expensive scraps of metal all over the desert. As it was the onboard A.I. simply acknowledged what would have been fatal strikes.

C'mon guys. You know I love ya, but it's like I keep telling the eggheads at DARPA or even Tony Stark himself: no robot will ever be able to best an ace human pilot when in the air. Never. Especially when it's me." War Machine responded.

"All this means is Stark Tech still outpaces what we came up with. Outside that suit..." one of them began.

"I could take these things in a Cessna. A Cessna. Write that down. You get it cleared with command and I will...hold up. Got a priority Avengers frequency."

Listening to the message his expression turned as sour as the grimace on his helmet. Any time Cap uttered those words it meant something big was going down, that lives were in danger. "Acknowledged Captain. The War Machine is already in the field. Forward coordinates and I will rendezvous with the team ASAP. War Machine out."

Pausing for a moment he contacted the ground team.

"Sorry boys, duty calls. Maybe by the time I get back you can have something that'll make me break a sweat. Just remember robots are machines and I don't see toasters getting the better of us any time soon."

With that War Machine departed, systems check confirming he was fully loaded and ready for action.

Steve was about to go finish getting ready to head out to the location of the disturbance, but a familiar gust of wind suddenly blew by and took him somewhat by surprise. Standing there near him was Pietro, shield in hand. Cap took it from his arm with a nod.

"Yeah. Mexico," he confirmed. "But I'm not so sure you should engage by yourself. We don't know what we're dealing with, and things could get dicey if we're not careful."

Cap allowed a minute or two for the rest of his allies who could respond to do so -- and in little time at all, they had gathered on his instruction. It was rare to find one person ready to drop everything at a moment's notice for the sake of the greater good, let alone an entire team. He often marveled at how lucky he was to count on them. He grasped his belt and stood before the Assembly table, looking between his allies.

"Good to see you too, Shellhead," he said to Tony. "T'Challa, Thor. Jen, Simon, Angie. Thanks for coming so promptly."

Steve waved his hand over the center console and tapped a few buttons, bringing up footage of the developing situation and 3D models of the city that Stark satellites had now managed to analyze, giving some time.

"About twenty minutes ago, fires and explosions broke out in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico. Now, generally, random things of this nature are chalked up to chance or natural disaster. Nothing we usually can afford to give up on our personal pursuits to do anything about, seeing as that's the job of emergency services," he explained.

Then, the footage switched to a shadowed figure flipping a first responder's vehicle overhead. It stomped off into the smoke, its details obscured by the fire and smog.

"As you might be able to tell, this is anything but natural. Satellites haven't been able to determine exactly what it is, but we don't have time to waste analyzing the situation left, right, and center." He affixed his helm to his head and shut off the center table. He turned and looked to Thor. "Think we could make use of that hammer of yours?"

When the portal opened, Cap waited for a brief few moments for any stragglers to arrive, but soon after was the first through the other side, centered on the coordinates he had pinged to the Avengers earlier. The feeling of walking through a wormhole was a peculiar but not unfamiliar one, one which thankfully didn't last long as soon, they were on the other side and face to face with their next mission.

The sun high above the sky had long been blotted out by the smoke and smog as it began to settle in the upper atmosphere. Straight ahead, a building was seen on its last legs, its foundation crumbling and threatening to topple several dozen tons of concrete and steel onto the street below. Several abandoned, wrecked vehicles dotted the road and painted a dreadful picture of civilians fleeing in terror from their as-of-now unseen foe. Were it not for the ruin and chaos, Steve thought that this architecture and culture was quite beautiful. Wasting no time, Cap turned to his team.

"First thing's first; we stop civilian casualties," he outlined, raising a hand. "Firestar, Tony, Quicksilver -- I want you three on evac. Search high and low for any survivors, and get them out of here and as far away from the action as you can. Take them to the west side if possible, and if you're engaged, their lives are priority number one."

Then, he glanced over to the others -- some of the biggest guns they had. "She-Hulk, Thor, Wonder Man -- you're the designated hitters. Find whatever's causing this and get its attention. Your objective is to draw this fight away from the city. See if you can't pull whatever it is to the east away from the evacuated citizens, anything we can do to minimize damage."

Then, Cap spoke directly into his comms. "Carol, Rhodey -- we're all here, and we've got our assignments. I want you two on air support once you get close. Be our eyes in the sky and try to see if you can call out anything. And if it gets ugly, you'll be our cavalry."

Cap tightened the shield to his forearm. He turned to T'Challa. "You're with me, my friend. Let's go save some lives." Nodding to his team one last time before breaking off from them, Cap lead the charge into the city from their spot.

Working methodically, the machine plodded slowly through the city. In its wake, fires blazed, turning structures to ashes as rubble filled the streets. What little resistance it... she was met with crumbled quickly. Police and firefights were forced into a constant losing battle as the mechanized terror worked. Every barrier they set up was slowly overcome and bullets bounced off the metal flesh of the destroyer, not seeming to even be enough to draw its attention.

Beams of energy flashed through the dust and smoke, striking buildings and charring foundations. She made no effort to target humans, but neither did she seem to be avoiding them, either. Still, the devastation wasn't total. Apartments were left untouched and she made no attempt to move near residential areas. No, her work at dismantling the city seemed contained to the areas of industry that poisoned the world. Her work would do similar, spreading more gas into the air, but it would subside in a few days and still not approach the levels the area would produce in a single year.

As the mechanized destruction grasped the front of a police car and tossed it effortlessly to the side, the police that were trying to hold the line ran. They would be back, forming a new line, but it was clear that they were hilariously and hopelessly outmatched.

Stark would find the situation as everyone was funneling in. This seemed like a big deal, one that he'd need to be there for... Not controlling with his mind, like normal. This was a different situation. Local enforcement couldn't even begin to put a dent in this thing...


"Cap, the Iron Legion is on its way now, and I'm getting suited up. Hopefully the legion can get most of the civilians with Quicksilver and Firestar's help, and I'll be able to help with the big bot."


As if on cue, the Iron Legion would arrive alongside the group as they entered the threat. The legion were combat bots, don't get him wrong, but they were nowhere near as durable as the natural Iron Man armors. They weren't built to also protect the people inside, mostly because none of them could house people. They would methodically begin to direct people away.


Meanwhile, Tony Stark had just finished getting his own suit on. FRIDAY booted up and gave him the rundown.


Good morning, Mister Stark. The threat you were briefed on seems to be immune to most forms of attack administered by law enforcement. The War Machine armor in also en route, would you like to patch in?


"I would love to, FRIDAY, thank you." He'd say inside his armor.


Inside War Machine's interface, a small Tony Stark face would appear in the top left corner. Hope he didn't have anything up there normally.


"Rhodey! Thought you'd be on your way here, need anything? Ammo? Gun? A better AI system to keep me out?"

Quicksilver raced away as soon as he heard his assignment. A purple streak would fly across the battlefield, gently scooping up civilians left and right. He would follow his commands to a tee... But he couldn't help but need to do more. Whenever he didn't have civilians in his arms, he would run by the big robot (being sure to avoid everyone else's attacks to not be in the way) and try to land some hits. One passing by of a leg punch. One passing face kick.
Couldn't hurt to weaken it up for his friends, right?

T’Challa subconsciously engaged his Kyo tracker,a deep purple circle appearing above each of the heroic Avengers present,. Allowing the Kimoyo network to monitor each Avengers biometrics and health status, feeding him critical updates on the fly and directly to his HUD. Trusting the auto tracking to ping any late comers The Black Panther turned and met Cap’s eyes before his mask seemingly materialized over his rugged features, The simple exchange
Would be enough to assure that T’Challa had caps back.

“Ill go high”

As he often did The King of Wakanda took to the roof tops when they sprinted through the portal,putting the vibranium energy dampeners in his boots to good use ,T’Challa ran directly up the side of the nearest tall building, keeping pace with Cap while hopping rooftops gracefully as he observed the shattered scene below. Kimoyo network scanned in and highlighted the Target as he contacted his ever faithful Dora Milaje piloting the Royal Talon and on their way.

“I need you to launch the observatory drones and then head to the civilian evacuation area in the city and fly any life threatening injuries to the nearest medical facility's.”

"Launching Observatory drones now!…our Eta is 3 minutes in counting beloved”

“..Make it Two”

T’Challa wanted to get a good view of the tech that this monstrosity wielded, so he could better understand how it worked in order to render it inert. As he came up on another gap between rooftops, a family fleeing between the buildings only looked up and saw a black blur accompanied by an amethyst flash as the Panther activated an energy dagger leaping across the gap and chopping a steel girder clean in half that was tumbling through the air via a nearby explosion.The steel beam landed harmlessly in two pieces on either side of the family smoking and sticking out of the ground like some strange monument to their continued existence .Landing gracefully on the edge of the next building, T’Challa stopped briefly to urge the shell shocked family onwards.

“Go now!..the iron man suits will guide you to safety.”

They rarely used Thor's portals to get to the battlefield, but with an unknown foe devastating a civilian area, it was far more urgent than usual. The instant that Captain America asked him, the Asgardian opened a dimensional tear, stepping through first to ensure any danger on the other side was directed at him and not one of the far flimsier Midgardians.

"Here we are in Hot Waters..." A strange name for a town, at least if he understood the Midgardian expression fully. But today at least, it was fitting.

As the others filed through to join him in the Mexican settlement, the Thunderer waited for Cap's orders and once they were given he took to the skies, getting a good look at the battlefield and their target. It only took him a moment to manoeuvre into position, flying in at full speed from the west, aiming to connect without it having a chance to react, so he could grapple it and let their momentum carry them higher and to the east, as per Cap's battle plan.

Faiza had only just returned to the headquarters when the alert came through on her communicator. She knew the drill, and made her way towards the briefing room as quickly as she was able, only stopping to retrieve and don her armour - something she was getting quite used to doing in a hurry. By the time she got there though it was empty, with a big glowing portal beginning to close in front of her. Excalibur didn't hesitate but sprinted through it just in time, stepping out the other side less than a second before the portal faded away. Pausing to gasp for breath, she looked around at the area, connecting what she'd heard over her comm from the briefing with what she could see. It seemed almost certain there'd be a lot for a healer like herself to busy herself with.

Carol tore through the air. She was almost at the coordinates that Cap had sent from the mansion. Over the comm he told her to keep to the sky. Great. Calvary. Borrring. Arriving in the air space of Aguascalientes, Mexico - Hey, wait, did they even have jurisdiction for this? Not that she was going to back off or anything, but Stark was probably going to be getting an earful from Osborn later. Anyway, she moved in and scanned the area with her eyes. At least they were here.

"At the moment, it just seems like it's toying with people." Carol remarked about the big mech chucking cop cars around and watching the people scurry away. Then Thor moved in for an attack (and quicksilver for a couple, though Carol couldn't see those). Carol just hovered above the scene watching 'The day the earth stood still' reject as it moved.

"I'd say watch out for the giant red faceplate. Ten bucks says it shoots things." she said to the group.
