Mortal fools! I am the Master of the Subconscious, the Midnight Leviathan... proof positive that the most precious of dreams too often fall prey to…Nightmare! ----------------------------------------- Niko would pause looking back at Ava as she debated whether to keep going or stay, she would ultimately stay and stand her ground against whatever was coming. She would sense Natasha approaching before she could see her, " Shes here get ready” Niko would say as she prepared for the worst. She would be shocked yet relieved when Black Widow didn't seem like she wanted to kill them. She would look to Ava before letting her guard down, as she looked up Natasha asked her a question she couldn't ignore. What kind of friend would she be if she lied, Ava is a good person she should know whats going on. “ You're in the Nightmare dimension… Your physical body is on earth, but your astral projection aka your soul is here. In the larger cosmic grand scheme of things, you are not dead until your soul is no more… Nobody ever truly dies. I am a Demon from the Kingdom of Coma captured by Nightmare as a war prize, my people rarely interact with mortals unless they enter a comatose state in which we decide who we deem worthy. Nightmare wants to crack you both and turn you into his puppets, if he can infiltrate SHIElD he would have the resources to find the contract of Sam Venganza.” Niko would explain before looking back hearing the sounds of guards. ” We can’t beat Nightmare with Brute force. He is basically one of the strongest beings in existence, but the Key is to prove you do not fear him in order to make his attacks weak. But the longer you stay in this Dimensions the harder it will be to leave, please let me take you to my Kingdom so I may return you back to where you belong.” Niko would urge looking at the now group of several Black widows surrounding them.

When Natasha came round the corner as Niko informed her Ava was ready but then she saw Nat's posture and something... What she said and with Niko relaxing made her relax a little. She was confused.
"No... I've only ate bread and cheese. That's all they have given us since..."
Then Niko spoke as her more recent memories came back to her. A place in the mountains. Pizza. The hungry feeling was still there, she didn't feel like she had had a good meal for... she wasn't sure how long. How long had she been there, years? months? days? minutes?... how long? She looked down to her hands they were normal. Why was she expecting them to be any different? They were just fingers and a palm.
Looking to Niko as the name rang in her ears one last time and the fear of what happened... or is happening hit her. Her voice was so quiet.
"Nightmare!"
The fear inside was strong and she hated it! Why did she fear him? He was behind the past few months of restless nights? Or was that something else? She looked up trying to find a face and lost track of which one was Natasha. Was it her Natasha? There were so many thoughts that made her so afraid, which she didn't normally show. Yet, in that place. They showed. She battled them every night and the worst one was the ones she shared. The ones where he died and she was helpless to save him. Where she was too weak to stop it. Where she wasn't better than Natasha, it was her fault that one friend was dead and another in a coma.
Looking round at the multiple Natasha's that fear made her feel smaller. The Natasha's around her feeling even stronger and more imposing. She wasn't good enough, she would never be good enough. She had allowed her friends to be hurt and be lost. It was her fault!

Ava spoke of bread and cheese but Nat's eyes never left the girl. And, the girl did not disappoint. She seemed to know exactly what was happening. They were caught up in Nightmare's realm. Their souls were still in tact - for now - so they weren't dead. Only their minds had been transported. By the name of the villain, Natasha assumed it was a dream even before the girl confirmed it. While Natasha went through her mental storage to figure out what she knew about a being called "Nightmare," the "girl" revealed herself to be a demon from another realm. Now, Natasha was familiar with demons such as Mephisto, Dormammu and Ghost Rider, and she really didn't tend to like what she knew.
Ava reacted as if she knew the name of their captor. "You need to tell me why you know that name," she said to Ava directly. "But now may not be the best time."
Natasha then looked at the self-professed demon. "You think he wants into SHIELD? I can understand your reasoning but I am curious to know more." They could hear others approaching. Natasha had to wonder if Nightmare was omniscient in this realm or if he only knew what his puppets could see or hear. Obviously he was not omniscient outside of here or he would not need SHIELD resources to find someone. There was no way to know how powerful he was in here just yet, but the smartest option was to err on the side of caution as much as logic.
"If confronting his pawns in this realm will prove we do not fear him then logic says we should stay and fight. However, if you have another idea, I'm open to hearing it," said Natasha. She was open to suggestions from someone familiar to the realm (even if she didn't fully trust them), but their time was running out. As it was, they were becoming surrounded by the trainee Black Widows from the Red Room. If true to a reality rather than one that was exaggerated and unreal in dreams, then these would be of little challenge to a fully trained and decades-experienced Black Widow.
But, this -was- a dream. Who knew what Nightmare had planned?

Mortal fools! I am the Master of the Subconscious, the Midnight Leviathan... proof positive that the most precious of dreams too often fall prey to…Nightmare! ----------------------------------------- And so the mortals and Demon would stand and fight Nightmare, it would piss him off to the highest degree. He was well aware that these puny widows would be quick work for the Widows, he also knew the demon next to them was no pushover but she also was no Dark Angel. And so he would waste little time before once more changing the reality around them, he would change the scenery to a Central Park with a pathway with lights. The thunder would ring as lightning lit up the sky but not a drop of rain would fall, in the distance stood a tall figure covered by Darkness with only his red eyes appearing. “ So you think you can challenge me? I am your worst Nightmare[/i] I am the Ruler of all things! I will destroy you[/font]” He would say before raising his arms sending several demons running their way. Niko would look at the Widows, ” There is someone who I think can get you back to earth, do either you know of the God of Death… Or I think you call her Dark Angel? Whatever the case may be, she has the ability to save you all. It will take time but I can perform a spell to bring her if given time” she would say before sending a ball of purple energy at one of the 4 demons running their way. ” We will never make it to my kingdom if he continues to warp reality, the longer the stay I fear you will become trapped” she would plead with them before running towards the demon punching it. “ As far as SHIELD word around Hell and other parts is that Mephisto, Nightmare, and Thog are all in a battle for Control of the Contract of San Vengaza. All three have already infiltrated SHIELD as far as I know, though what they need is someone with High Connections and capable of fulfilling what he needs. If any of them get control of SHIELD earth as you know it will fall” She would go on to say. Nightmare would soon start walking their way causing the lights to turn off as he moved, he would then quickly appear in front of Natasha. ” You can not outrun your fears'' he would say before he would go in to slap her. “ I will make you break! You will never leave this realm”

Ava was panicking, she didn't know why. Looking at her hands nothing was going on. Nothing! What was she supposed to expect they were just hands. Natasha spoke but it was distant to her mind. Only a brief flicker of what she had gone through leaked to Nat's mind. There had been a report of it but Ava had been unconscious for a long time after it had happened. One of her longest comas somehow her debriefing had been forgotten or not included. Who knew the reason but it had.
Ava frowned as the ground she was looking at below her hands shifted to that of outside. Then she looked up, the amount of Natasha's around her made her feel worse. The conversation going over her head as she looked confused as the demons came towards her. Instinctively she held up her hands but nothing happened. Then Nightmare was right in front of them. Niko was fighting but she didn't know how to. The memory was slipping, the instincts, the past. It was slipping from her mind and soul.
She looked over to Natasha a glazed expression on her face but as the slap was swinging for Natasha Ava moved instinctively. No thought needed as she moved blocking the blow and trying to grab his wrist with her momentum pull it towards his side aiming to twist it around his body. If she failed it would mean that slap would hit her blocking arm. The glazed expression becoming clearer as her thoughts started to take a clearer shape and she spat words back at Nightmare.
"Wrong. We ARE afraid but we don't let them claim us!"

The Widows were barely in range when Nightmare changed their scenery. Natasha had to smirk to herself. The more the being changed reality around them, the easier it was to avoid getting sucked into his illusions. He was supposed to be good at this, or so his name would imply. Instead, the more he made her setting less real, the less enticed Natasha was to believe his little game was reality. And that, she assumed, was the crux of his power. His victims had to be sucked into his illusions, his dreams. Otherwise, they would recognize a dream for what it was and could choose to fight him and, eventually, wake up.
He threatened them with a booming voice and paltry theatrics. Nat knew she was supposed to be afraid of such a display, but as yet she felt she was still in control of her situation enough that he held less power than he assumed. This theory was only strengthened the more frustrated the dark being became. So, when he sent the demons after them, Natasha would chose to stand.
As Niko spoke, however, Natasha had the realization that she must have misheard the demon girl before. Nat thought she had said "Sam" Vengaza and thought the girl was saying the demon leaders wanted a man. Now that she heard her say San Vengaza while also mentioning Dark Angel, Natasha was sure she meant a little ghost town in Texas. It wasn't a strategically important location to her but she knew the name from reading a few files about Johnny Blaze and, therefore, knew on some level that it was important to the Hellish side of things. The politics of Hell, however, were complicated and not usually a worry for the Black Widow. Her operations were generally of the more physical plane of existence; not the ethereal. In this circumstance, though, those things became more relevant.
"Do you mean to say that we cannot simply wake ourselves?" Natasha asked when she realized the demon girl said they needed someone to transport them back to earth. "This sounds problematic."
Then he was in front of her. Like some Slenderman move from the game, Nightmare appeared before her and took a swing. Natasha moved to avoid the hit and enter the battle in which Niko was already engaged. Ava then suddenly appeared in front of her, intending to take the blow. Natasha was already in motion to dodge the blow, but paused in a low, ready stance and watched. Ava had finally awoken from her fear and was facing it, literally. The elder Widow felt pride in her sestra. She'd been feeling the confusion and fear from Ava through their link despite her efforts to block it out. Now it appeared at least part of her had snapped out of it. She was engaging the enemy and attempting to speak her truth.
Nat moved to back Ava up. The pair knew how to fight in tandem. With their unique bond, they were able to instinctually know the moves of the other better than many teams who'd trained together for years. They would hopefully buy Niko some time, provided the girl could continue to dispatch of the lesser demons with her magic as she had been. She purposely made herself feel confidence in the face of uncertainty. Not only was it the way she was trained, but it was necessity to ensure Ava continued to grow in confidence, too.
"To fear is human. To overcome it is victory," Natasha proclaimed calmly as she quickly lunged to a more strategic position, flanking the Nightmare aberration, all the while wary of his trickery. She began with her fists, hopefully connecting to make punishing kidney strikes.

Mortal fools! I am the Master of the Subconscious, the Midnight Leviathan... proof positive that the most precious of dreams too often fall prey to…Nightmare! ----------------------------------------- The girl would continue fighting answering Natasha's question “ Yes that would be correct, he has your astral projections, but if my spell works correctly we can transport your body to your astral projection when summoning shevaun who could then get you all out of here safely.” Just as she finished her sentence a blast would send her flying off to the side rolling through the dust. Nightmare would still be focusing on Natasha who along with her little sidekicks decided to face off with Fear Lord head-on, it was very amusing to him as he let off an evil chuckle just as Natasha came in with several kicks that did not phase him even slightly. “ The weaker you mortals are the louder you bark, it amuses me that you think you will ever leave here” The ground would start to crumble under the pair’s feet as Nightmare became more frustrated with them. This was not the same Ava he recalled from the Saw games he put her and others through, the one that hid behind shevaun for protection from his wrath. He would cast a spell causing the pair to be wrapped in thick vines before he would transform into Oksana, he would look at ava as the sounds of the people who died during the Brooklyn incident could be heard in the background. “ Why did you leave me, Ava, where did you go?” the girl would say in the same voice ava remembers. She would then go on speaking, “ I saw what happened in Brooklyn against Skinless… all those people you let die. As the buildings felled around you and children were killed, mothers and, fathers you couldn’t save. Please Ava just for me gives u…” Before the girl could finish her sentence the demon girl would cast her own spell. “ Et incarnatus est de coma Confiteantur mihi lucente” she would yell as several bolts of lighting would blast the girls out of the shell. “ Hit him now!” she would yell as she started her other spell ritual.

Ava moved without needing to think. She was trying to fight just like Natasha. Their movements were perfectly attuned until she was grabbed. Unlike Natasha, she was quiet. She tried to move so that the vines but it would be futile at least to start with. The distraction of the vines was enough for her to miss the transformation and it was only when the voice spoke that she looked up with her heart sinking. She couldn't figure out what was reality or fake. The noises came back to her with the shock of what happened. Yet the words Sana said... was she there? Slowly her resistance almost halted.
"I tried! I couldn't! I was only supposed to observe and place! I didn't mean to get into the combat it just happened. I'm sorry!"
Each sentence was broken as more voices echoed in her own mind. The blame she put on herself. The anger. Then a blast hit Ava's vines but her mind was racing. The anger at hearing those words as she feared that Sana was going to get hit by the demon. Her yell was primal.
"NOOOO!!!"
She fought against the vines to try and help Sana. She tried to free herself to get to her and to help. Her heart was pounding and her body tingled. There were no sparks though. Nothing. It was all her fault. She shouldn't have brought her here! Then another figure appeared. Male who stopped her from trying to help Sana. Now she was being held back. Body shaking with anger and frustration the teenage man leaned down and whispered something in her ear. Tears flooded down her cheeks as she looked longingly at the person she loved. For once they were able to touch. It smelt like him, sounded like him. It made her heart burst with joy and hurt.
"I don't understand. I'm sorry."
She looked down, frowning, tears falling off her pointed chin. Then she looked up a rage filled her as the figure had vanished.

Natasha wasn't sure what she knew about astral projection except that Doctor Strange would be very useful right about now. He was the mystic arts master and the one who, apparently, could toggle his soul in and out of his physical body on a whim. Natasha couldn't recall any time she'd been physically removed from her body. At least not at this moment. If it had happened, this experience wasn't ringing any bells yet. That meant, all she could do was fight physically the way she knew - which didn't appear to be doing any harm - and try to outsmart the being. Nightmare was cocky. That would eventually be his downfall. However, from the way the other girl demon spoke, staying her for long was a poor option. But bringing their bodies to this realm? Was that a smart idea?
"That sounds dangerous, too!" Natasha cried out to Niko as the ground beneath her feet began to crumble. Nightmare then tossed the demon aside. Natasha tried to find solid footing but it was as if a sinkhole had opened and whether it was real or not, it sure felt real! Her eyes saw the vines erupt from the cracking ground but was unable to avoid being wrapped in them. Ava was no more lucky. Natasha fought her restraints but without any weapons, getting out of the unnatural vines was not going to be simple.
The Nightmare shapeshifted into the visage of Oksana and Nat cast an anxious eye at Ava. Her protégé reacted to the image of her best friend exactly how Nightmare planned. Natasha frowned. Ava was sorely in need or reigning in her emotions. Why had SHIELD not taught her more? Why hadn't she? This is something Natasha would remedy once they returned to the real world. Natasha struggled against her grapple to little effect, wanting to distract Nightmare from further torment. Her eyes looked up from the vines in time to see Alexei appear next to Ava. Natasha froze in place and her struggle lessened. She watched as Alexei whispered something to Ava then faded away. Her jaw tightened. Was he here? Is his astral form imprisoned in this place? No! It couldn't be!
Ava became docile and fell when Niko used some kind of magic to break their bonds. Nat landed in a three-point landing on the ground and looked up at Nightmare. She had to distract him from Ava. Her sestra was beginning to look at him angrily, but that did not mean she was prepared for the fight. Not mentally, and especially not emotionally. The Widow called out to the lesser demon whom she had no choice but to trust, "Do what you must!"
She then moved and grabbed Ava by her arms. "We need to distract him - not the other way around!" she would tell her. "All he has are parlor tricks. He's a pretender. Remember that!
Then she would next turn to face the vision of Oksana. Her emotions were fully in check as her training demanded when she determined not to strike the thing with another fistful of smite. Rather, she would taunt him. "You are a deceiver, but your tricks aren't very convincing to me! I've partnered with the magnificent Doctor Strange and he is oh, so much better."

Mortal fools! I am the Master of the Subconscious, the Midnight Leviathan... proof positive that the most precious of dreams too often fall prey to…Nightmare! ----------------------------------------- Nightmare would let off a Grin as he watched Ava fall for his deceptions, he knew she would be the easiest to crack with her weak mind. Nightmare would look at Natasha as she started to speak “ Tricks are not what I do… everything you see is Real… Natalia tell me something darling, why could you never accept Ivan Petrovich as more than a father? I think you two would make such a good couple” The Leviathan would say with a smile on his face as Thunder would go off around them, he would move the demon girl away to another part of the realm unaware of her plans. His attention would quickly turn back to Black Widow as she mentioned Strange to him, “ YOU DARE MENTION THAT FOOL NAME IN THE REALM OF NIGHTMARES!!” he would yell in anger as he would get in her face showing off his devilish teeth and face. “ You will die many deaths when you Die… and I will be there waiting to take your soul and use it for my own gains. I Will torment you now and forevermore” he would say before he made Ivan appear before her except in his original form. “ I know everything Natasha, I know everything…” Nightmare would say as he threw Iva on Natasha. She would be faced with seeing Alexi and Ivan next to eachother. “ Save Me.. please!” Ivan would beg of her before Nightmare wrapped his arm around his neck lifting him off the ground, he would then cause Sana body to appear in his other hand. “ You could save them, but only one will survive the fight to the Death and you will get what you most desire.” Nightmare would say letting off a laugh as he squeezed them tighter. “ There is nobody to save you, nobody knows where you are… your friend Dark Angel isnt here Ava! It just you, me, and the Russian Backstabbing whore next to you. If she can betray the Avengers and SHIELD she can betray you to Ava. there’s no way out but a fight… hell who are you going to call the Hellraisers?” he would go on saying to the girl while looking at Natasha.

Ava was looking at the floor, her hair masking her face and her breathing slowed. There was a time and a place to be angry. If here was not right then she needed to dig. She looked down where her hand rested and focused on the sensation. Her power still wasn't there but what was was her strength and pride. Yes, she had weaknesses but everyone did and now they were shown to Natasha they didn't seem so bad or as weak.
With words ringing in her ear that had been whispered to her she started to smile. When Natasha grabbed her arm she was already starting to get herself together better. Nightmare's hold on her soul was being shattered. The voice that spoke brought all her awareness back to the fore. She knew the person who looked like Alexi was not him. She knew that wasn't Sana. She also knew that it wasn't Ivan.
"I choose a third choice."
She said with a defiant voice that she normally held at bay. She stood up with her full height, uncurling like a person doing yoga. Her hair was the last to fall away from her face. The smile was still there.
"Your nothing! Yes, we both have nightmares but you sir.... are only small in the whole scheme of things."
She moved forward with speed. The palm of her hand aiming for the centre of Nightmare's chest whist her other hand was aimed at landing a blow to his kidneys. This was all Ava. With each small phrase she attacked.
"You brought me here. You are nothing with out people who are afraid! I ain't afraid of you any more than I am afraid of loosing any more friends. I'm strong. I'm proud and I am Ava!"
The last few blows were accompanied by electricity which grew stronger and strong as she broke through his hold fully.
"I am the Red Widow!"
She aimed a flurry of blows which included several kicks, she was nimble but accurate. The combination of dancing lessons and fencing had proven useful.

Natasha knew she had provoked the astral being when he thundered his disgust at Strange's name. He started resorting to petty insults and tricks that might seem scandalous to the Nightmare, but for one with her training seemed rather inconsequential. Implying she should have pursued a relationship with Ivan, whom he made appear before her, was little more than disgusting. The man was an abusive father figure in her life, a man who should have had her best interests in mind but only thought of his own. To insinuate she would feel anything for him after what he had done to her and was still doing through his proxies was nothing but, "Gross," she mumbled. Her own disgust with her former father would be apparent as she threw him off her like the rag doll she saw him as.
Nightmare lifted the fake Ivan off the ground by his neck. Oddly, the image of Ivan squirming was a little bit satisfying. If Nightmare meant his threats to mean something, he probably should have chosen someone from her past that she actually felt more than hate toward. As it was, when he also presented Oksana to her in the other hand, Natasha just stared. These were mere figments of her imagination, and even if they were real it mattered little. After all, Oksana was not her friend, either. She was Ava's and, if her protege's now apparent reality check was any indication, Nightmare was losing her, too.
Ava kicked and hit at Nightmare, apparently dismissing his taunts against Natasha even though he wasn't exactly wrong. She had betrayed SHIELD and the Avengers on several occasions. None of them were recent, though, and that had to count for something! So, taking Ava's cue, Natasha also started a beat down on Nightmare. Sure, he seemed invincible here in his own lair. However, he sent the demon girl away which meant that they either had to fight him in the only ways they could to try to save themselves, or he had given the demon girl just the opportunity she needed to get whatever spells or magics off that she needed. Whichever way the cards fell, Nat planned to be out of this place before dawn and call it all one big bad dream.
"Widow's shouldn't be trifled with, Nightmare," she would say after a swift kick to his torso. She made a few more punches here and there, none which she expected to harm the ethereal being but they made her feel better. "We live for the fight, not in our pasts! What is this? Amateur hour?"

Stop Your Moaning… I Know How Beautiful I Am. ----------------------------------------- Niko would find herself safe away from the battle but closer to her home of Coma, with only a couple of miles separating her she could leave the girls and get home safely. But she wouldn't she felt a bond with Ava and she couldn't abandon her when she needed her the most, she would finish her spell slowly cutting her skin causing orange blood to drip out. She would draw a 5 pointed star in the soil before dropping her blood around it, she would start her chant speaking in Latin “ Mittam tibi dicimus Gruva mortem Shevaun nos ab exterminatore. Et corpus eius est ex duobus, Ava Cornelius sequuntur somnia Numquid victimas et solve fasciculos” (Azrael we call for you to send your death, bring us Shevaun the Angel of Death. With her comes the body of two, Ava and Natasha Nightmares Victims undo) With the chant being completed the ground started to shake as several portals open, dropping Shevaun and two bodies straight into the ground. Niko would be standing over a distraught and confused Shevaun who would get up looking at her with a grin, “ Niko uhh, what is going on? Why… Why am I in…” she would turn to her side and see the body of Ava laying their motionless. “ Ava!... Ava wake up, No...no...no What happened Niko?” Shevaun would say holding Ava’s body with sadness turning to anger on her face. “ He has their astral bodies, he captured them sometime after he captured me in his conquest of Coma. They are alive for now, he moved me over here as he just kicked up his battles, perhaps you can find her telepathically?” Niko would go on to ask as Shevaun looked around still with anger, she had warned Nightmare once before to leave Ava alone and he continues to do otherwise he would have to pay. She would put her goggles on before concentrating before zooming in on Ava and Black Widow astral form, she would talk into their head hiding her voice from Nightmare. “ Ava… I’m coming for you just stay strong” she would say before the voice would disappear.
Mortal fools! I am the Master of the Subconscious, the Midnight Leviathan... proof positive that the most precious of dreams too often fall prey to…Nightmare! ----------------------------------------- Nightmare chuckled at Ava as she begins to mention small schemes this child must have not known whom she spoke to, “ Small Schemes! Hahaha! I am much more than small schemes, the very fabric of the Universe requires me in order for you to survive! ” he would say as he looked around at the girls. Ava would give her grandstanding speech that he would find almost amusing, they need not be afraid of him as long as they fear something. That was the beauty of Fearlords, their very Essence is based off of fear, mortals always feared something even things as small as a spider. But within his ignorant daydream, he felt the hits of Ava and Natasha come full swing, it had caught him completely off guard actually giving a bit of a sting. He would wave his hand causing both Natasha and Ava to get thrown back, he would sense another being far more powerful than Ava and Natasha could ever be. “ That Witch! Tell me who she has summoned or I will kill you both!” Nightmare demanded.

Ava was enjoying pummelling Nightmare even if it didn't have much of an impact. The best bit was that she was venting a load of her aggression out on him. Then it all ended as she was flung backwards and somehow landing in a heroes pose. Looking up from where she was she just smiled at him and chuckled.
"If you kill us, how could you torture us?"
She heard the voice but her face remained amused. It wasn't every day that Ava was this chatty. The normal quiet girl stood up and looked at the man before her. Her mind doing the work as she moved her hand to the side and a boy walked up and held it. There was something about her, something that was stronger than before. She didn't even need to look. She held her other hand out as she felt the surge deeper inside her. Her mental message went out to both Natasha and Shevaun.
"I'll hold him if I can. I got this."
Then she let the power which glowed from within stream from her fingers. She seemed to light up with the energy. The boy let go of her hand and walked over to Natasha as the stream of steady energy flew directly towards Nightmare. She had feared her power but here, she was forced to accept it, forced to calm it.... at least a little (for how long she wasn't sure). The power pulsed like beads of light along a string.

Natasha could see a wince in Nightmare's eyes after he spewed out more arrogant banter. They were at least affecting him in some tangible way for him to react to their bludgeoning. So, while she continued the barrage, her mind spun rapidly. This world was sort of like a dream: reality here was different than reality as she knew it. If that were true, then it implied that in some ways reality as she knew it could be suspended. Thus, a logical conclusion would be that any pain she perceived in this world may be little more than her assumption that there -should- feel pain. Her grasp on gravity as she knew it may even work similarly. However, Natasha could more easily overcome the idea of pain than she could imagine herself flying. So, she set her mind to suspending her own reality, a discipline she may have success with when other did not simply because of her intense training and mental conditioning.
Natasha threw more punches and kicks, trying to wrap her mind around the idea that this was a "dream." Sure, astral projection was probably different, but it also wasn't something with which Nat had experience. Perhaps after this she would speak with Dr. Strange about it. In the meantime, Natasha focused on what she could comprehend: This was not real. So when Nightmare waved his hand and sent the pair of women flying backward, she was more prepared. Her mind enveloped her in confidence and the Widow tucked and rolled in the air, controlling her descent toward the ground and landing beside Ava in an identical hero pose. She looked sideways at her protégé and wondered, "Is she also realizing the bend of reality?"
Then a voice entered her head, a voice that spoke more to Ava than herself. Natasha rose a brow at Ava that the girl never saw nor would she probably have acknowledged because as the older Widow watched, Ava stood and held out a hand. When she did, Alexei appeared at her side and took her hand in his. She watched as Ava practically lit up with energy. It welled within her, seeming to almost burst from her body. Ava mentally communicated with the voice and Natasha that she would hold Nightmare at bay, even as Nightmare screamed his demand to know who was here. Natasha realized at once that this wasn't her fight anymore, and that it probably never was.
Alexei walked to her and Natasha stood while Ava unleashed her pent up power on the beast who sought to frighten and imprison them. The boy held out his hand to her and Natasha gave a soft smile. She took his hand and held it firmly. If this was a a place she could see and touch her brother again, then she would accept that gift for as long as it was available. Ava often seemed to think that Nat didn't miss him as much as she did, but that was a false assumption. The truth of it was that Natasha was simply more accustomed to saying goodbye. She rarely had anyone remain in her life for long.
So as the pair watched Ava virtually explode on Nightmare, Natasha smiled and squeezed Alexei's hand. He looked at her and smiled back. "You never call. You never write," he teased in his typical Alexei way.
"You never send me flowers," Nat finished for him. It should have been weird to be bantering while Ava did battle with the Nightmare, but somehow it just felt normal.
Alexei grinned. His smile faded from mirth to sadness. "I know this is a bad place, but I wish...."
Natasha felt her soul ache for the same, unspoken things. She looked sideways at her brother and exhaled solemnly. "Me, too." She squeezed his hand gently then the pair of them looked back at Ava and Nightmare battling.
"She's improving."
Someone would be here soon to help them. Until then, Ava said she had this. And, while Natasha was holding her dead brother's hand, she was very inclined to agree.
"Yes. She is."
