Mettle was standing in the far back of Central Park, where a concert was going on. It wasn't anybody famous, just a couple of groups of local bands but the city had sponsored this so a decent crowd had shown up. Mettle was wearing his long trench coat but he also had a pair of slacks and a long sleeved shirt on, so most of his metal self was hidden from view and he wore the hat he'd found the first time he went exploring, it was kind of his hat now.
Anyway, he was nodding along to the beat when he noticed a small(to him) red haired girl break through the crowd and run into the more dense part of the park. Concerned, he followed her, calling out "Are you okay?" when he got close enough. He heard a surprised gasp and what sounded like someone trying to stop crying and he paused, feeling awkward. "Sorry, I just saw you run out and wanted to make sure no one was bothering you" he stuttered out, shaking his head. Like what would he do if she said someone was, find them and stomp them?
After a couple of minutes, the girl stepped forward and raked her hand over her eyes before saying "Sorry. No one's bothering me, I just...that last song reminded me of something I'm going through and I got emotional." Mercury wrapped her arms around herself, shivering a little and Mettle knew what he had to do. He took off his coat and put it around her, smiling a bit as he said "It's chilly out tonight. My name's Mettle, by the way." Mercury smiled a bit and said "I'm Mercury, and thank you!" She then noticed a glint of metal and said "You're like me, sort of!" before showing her own grayish skin. "I can morph into things" she explained, causing Mettle to grin as he could explain his gimmick.
"I'm super strong and tough" he said shyly, pulling up his sleeve so Mercury could see the metal that covered his body. "Cool!" Mercury exclaimed, still sad but happy she'd run into a fellow powered person while she sat on a bench that was nearby. Mettle just stood, a bit scared to try to sit on what seemed to be mostly a wooden bench, but he rubbed his head and asked "Do you have anyone who came with you?" Mercury shook her head and said "I came by myself, didn't know they'd be playing that song." Just then the music changed and she breathed a sigh of relief, which made Mettle feel better. "Yeah, I mean I get the artist wanted to be angsty but if you don't want to be reminded of something..." and then he trailed off.
"Anyway, want me to walk you home?" he asked, wondering if she lived nearby but she shook her head. "I go to the Jean Grey school and I've got friends picking me up" she explained, looking up at the tall young man. "But thanks for talking with me, it helped." Mettle grinned and said "No problem, Mercury! Glad I could help." Mercury blushed then quickly asked "Do you have a phone?", asking for it once Mettle nodded. She whistled cause it was a bit larger than a normal cell phone, but added her number to his contacts and handed it back before jumping up from the bench. "Thanks again!" she hollered before dashing off toward the parking lot.
Mettle chuckled as he realized a girl had just given him her number but he just tucked his phone back in his pocket and slowly started walking home, a smile on his face.
