For what was probably the tenth time since he'd been freed from Apocalypse's control and been dragged into another ridiculous world changing mess, Gambit sat down at his laptop to write an email. The words flowed freely as always, so much easier to type than to say in person, not that he could ever risk a face to face meeting with anyone he knew right now.
Ma cher amor.
I figure I owe you an explanation for why I vanished once more.
At first, it was because I was scared. Of how much I'd messed things up yet again. I didn't choose to become Death, but I know I should have fought back more, somehow, and I came so close to ending you... if that had happened, I would not be here to write this letter to you. Without you, I have nothing to live for. Each time in the past I have failed you, that my own past has caught up with me, I fear it is the one time that you cannot forgive and this is no different. If that is the case... I understand. I know I do not deserve what my heart desires, and that only makes me desire it more. A simple, quiet life with the woman I love.
You.
Anne-Marie, I have known very few moments of happiness in my life, and just about all of them were because of you being there. You know the kind of man I am, but I give you my most solemn word, the next time I see you, I will be yours forever if you desire it. And if I am not fortunate enough to ever see you again? I have much that people desire, money, special talents, but I know only one thing I could ever give you that truly matters. If I die, I leave you my name. It would be yours to do with as you wish, but I truly hope that you would become Anne-Marie Lebeau. Whilst everyone at the mansion has been family ever since you arrived, I hope that this would leave you something worthwhile of me to always carry with you.
And if I do see you again? I offer you my name anyway. Anne-Marie? Will you marry me? I know you can't answer this email which is encrypted by all sorts of complicated things I don't understand to make it untraceable, but when we are again face to face, you can tell me then, and silence the fear that I have already lost you forever.
Gambit stopped his typing and sat back, reading through it twice with a tear trickling down his cheek. His hand moved with uncharacteristic hesitation to the mouse, a few clicks sending a final, irreversible command.

And with that, he turned back to the bottle of whisky that had been his only comfort through these nights where he felt especially lonely, nights which were coming more and more frequently. Hopefully these Skrulls would slip up and he'd be able to go public again soon.
