Mercury was sat on the roof of the school again, she enjoyed it. It was quiet and usually no one disturbed her, she could bring food or listen to music or, like tonight, just sit in silence and listen to the noise of the city far below. Her eyes occasionally strayed to the Avengers Academy but she had mostly gotten used to her friend Mettle not being there, though they had been writing emails back and forth, which is nice, and he had offered to host her over Christmas if she wanted to get out of school for a bit. She for sure was excited about that, and had been given permission, but she also still felt a bit lonely.
It was hard to describe why she felt lonely, she had friends and was mostly getting along with the teachers and other adults, maybe she just needed to get out of school for a while. After all, she mainly stayed at school unless she had to go out for something, but most of what she needed was inside these walls, plus it could be dangerous out there, on the streets. Not everyone liked mutants, so it was safer for her to stay on the school grounds, but at the same time there was not much adventure to be had by staying safe. Also she was not as normal looking as some others, so if she did venture beyond the walls, sooner or later someone would notice her metal skin. Now it was nearing the time of year where it actually might be safer to go outside, as Halloween was approaching as a holiday, and there were people who dressed up as their favorite superheroes, but not many people either knew who she was or thought she was special enough to cosplay as her.
Mercury stood up and carefully walked to the edge of the roof, looking down at the busy traffic far below, and sighed again. She was doing much better in that she no longer wanted to be normal and she had, for the most part, embraced her powers, but she supposed everything couldn't be perfect, at least not all the time. Also, with all the training she'd been doing, she was developing some nice muscles, so that was a positive! She then looked up at the sky and smiled, seeing a couple of her favorite constellations. "Orion, you never change" she said with a smile as she turned around and started gathering her stuff together, shoving it all into her backpack then opening the roof door and stepping inside.
Maybe I can talk Ms. Blaire into taking a bunch of us on a field trip somewhere she thought as she walked down the flight of steps to the door that led to the dorms. She thought about what the field trip could be and mentally made a note to ask Ms. Blaire about it tomorrow before class, then she opened the door and crept quietly to her room, as most likely everyone was sleeping.
