Continuity note: This takes place after Secret Invasion.
"I have no right to tell others what to do...much less to send others to their deaths. That is why I choose to serve...not to lead. I want to help others...ACTUALLY help others. Not merely give the order to help. If I become incapable of doing the work, what right do I have to tell others their jobs? I swore an oath to protect the innocent...an oath where I declared myself no better than the common man even IF I consort with the likes of kings and gods. And by every deity in the known multiverse I intend to keep that oath! So, if you intend to sit me on a throne and have me just give commands instead of letting me do MY ACTUAL JOB, you can take that crown and pitch it into the nearest trash bin because THAT is how valuable it is to me!" - Anthony, Gamemaster
Carol took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she took in the fresh air. She was far away from the hustle and bustle of New York. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of birds chirping and the dull roaring of engines from planes from the distance. She was about to do something that she had not done in a long time, not since McKinney. She stretched and turned on her MP3. As Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins began to play she smiled to herself. She hadin't even taken off yet she could feel her blood pumping, not out of nervousness bet excitement. She missed this.
"Time to take flight."
BOOM!!!
With the sound of a sonic boom Carol Danvers Aka Warbird flew into the air. A huge smile formed on her face. The wind in her hair the feeling of touching the clouds. No danger, no conflict just her and the sky. So often it seemed like the general public associated with the Avengers that they forgot her first love was being an Air Force pilot. In fact, she was essentially the mascot for the Airforce at this point...not to mention the pinup model whose picture was used on the airplanes of Warbird Squadron. The best way Carol could describe it was that the ground at times felt too heavy and crowded...space felt too cold and empty...but the sky, something about the sky felt...freeing...the perfect middle ground between the land and the cosmos.
As she flew through the air, she passed a flying jet. When she pulled up beside him, the pilot looked over and did a double-take before giving a thumbs up. Smiling, she gave a thumbs up in kind.
