Personality
Rift loves strategizing and thinking outside the box. He's a big fan of forming strategies, playing strategy games, testing out his creativity and seeing how far he can test his powers. He's testing out his powers and knows more about his potential than the average hero, and he's always trying to strive to out-do himself. He's even made it a personal goal to try and defeat everyone he can in fair combat, just to see how far he can go.
Rift is not one to get attached to things. His own personal history has lead him to be somewhat distrusting of kind faces, often worrying that people will hate him if they knew who and what he really is. Most of his relationships tend to be casual, making it easy for him to up and leave at a moment's notice. This had the unfortunate side-effect of making him unable to deal with serious problems. And why should he, when he can just up and ditch them at any moment?
He's also an opportunist. He would never compromise go around murdering people, hurting innocents, or selling his previous clients' information. But he's been known to side with criminals if it helps him.
Socially? Don't expect much from him, either. He's very serious during missions. He isn't one to joke around outside of them, either. Some say he has a stick up his butt, which would be as accurate as it is crude.
You read all that? Good. Now, ignore it. Because that's just him during work.
His civilian life has him acting a minor pop star. And as a regular person, he projects the image of a himbo. Just a shallow, empty-headed himbo who can be a bit insensitive with his words, leading him to insult others on accident. Well, on "accident." He's infamous for being a clueless ditz. He lives in his own world. He couldn't spell "politics," much less have an opinion on any. If only people knew this was just him having fun during his off hours.
Rift’s main power is to create portals, which he uses to spy on others, transport people, smuggle things, or create diversions. He rarely fights people directly; instead, he uses his powers to mess with the field. When creating a portal, one will open up within arm's reach, and will connect to a portal that will appear at his desired location. His range is about 13,000 km. He can't access other dimensions through his power, but he can teleport around a dimension he's currently in.
His powers require him to have a location within his direct field of view, or to have been in that immediate area before. Otherwise, his powers "guess" the location, and open a portal to a completely random location on the planet, usually within two thousand miles of his current location. His power is also location-based, not person-based; he can't specifically try to find a person unless he knows their exact location. So no thinking of Spider-Man and trying to catch him at home.
The portals are rips in the fabric of space and time, thus don't actually have a form that can be touched or attacked - only walked through, like the empty space in an archway. The portals circular. These portals, once opened, can exist independently of Rift. He usually wills them to close instantly after he uses them, and can choose for how long they remain open Otherwise, they close after about thirty seconds, regardless if they're used. The portals can be any size, as long as they fall under 15 feet in diameter; they can't grow beyond that to accommodate travel for larger opens or things. There are no limits as to how many people can go through. Note that a portal will only lead to the location it's connected to; the portal's can't intersect, which means that you can't jump for a portal leading to England, only to end up in another portal's location of Ireland. Portals are only two-way.
Spatial Awareness: His powers have a form of unconscious spatial awareness. They can't open up in the middle of a solid object, or right through a living being. This is to prevent Rift from accidentally rifting himself into a death trap. On the flip side, it means he can't set up death traps for others: no matter how much he tries, the portals won't lead into spaces that are otherwise impossible for people to enter.
Multi-Portal: Rift can have up to six large portals at a time. Rapid-fire portal creation exhausts his powers, so creating portal after portal can burn him out. However, making smaller portals gives him more to work with. He can make about a dozen, fist-sized portals before he gets too tired. He can create millions amount of sub-atomic portals.
Surveillance: One can see through the portals, granting them a view of what's on the other side.
Torrent: Opens a portal to somewhere in the ocean, shooting forth a torrent of water at a target.
The Incredible Slice: By putting an object halfway through a portal, then making the portal vanish, the object is severed at the points in which it touches the portal. Certain material (Mysterium, Adamantium) seems to resist this, and will instead prevent the portal from closing around it. Note that this doesn't work on living or sentient beings; if someone is caught between portals, the portal will only close until it's touching their skin. This will trap them in the portal and between locations, but not harm them. When this happens, the portal will adjust and move with the person as they walk, to prevent them from accidentally separating their parts. Remember, no death traps.
Scatter Slap: He can touch something and open up countless tiny portals on a molecular level, getting in-between that object’s molecules/atoms/whatever. This would let him instantly scatter something across the world with his powers. Instant vaporization. The downside? He needs to keep touching that object for three, uninterrupted minutes in order to concentrate on generating enough portals at once. Once he uses the Scatter Slap, he's left incredibly exhausted and can't use his powers for fifteen minutes.
Secondary Eyes: When his back and forearms are exposed to sunlight, tattoo-like eyes will slowly begin to develop on his body. They fade over time if left covered up. They cannot be seen through, nor controlled, but can blink and look around independently. However, since he dislikes them immensely, he keeps them covered up. Some experts in mutation have theorized that they are simply underdeveloped, and can one day function properly if Rift trained them. But he has absolutely no intention of doing this, so it'll likely never happen in this reality.
Weaknesses
Burnout: His powers are limited by distance. Whereas a Starling or someone like Lila Cheney can bring themselves across large distances with ease, Rift's powers can be temporarily exhausted if he travels too far. The farther he goes, the more it can tire him out. While traveling from New York to New Mexico is an easy trip, traveling cross-country can exhaust his powers and prevent him from creating any portals for six seconds. Traveling to the other side of the world can knock his powers out for about a few minutes. Traveling to the his upper limits can knock out his powers for ten minutes.
Power burn-out and exhaustion can also manifest as physical exhaustion. His powers don't simply turn off, but also exhaust his body. The more he uses them, the more he gets exhausted. One portal across the country is the equivalent of walking two feet for him, while more and more distance and portal-creations labor him more. His current distance limit would be as exhausting and painful as giving birth.
Space Weakness: There's something about space that affects his powers. Maybe it's the gravity, or magnetic waves, or something. But when Rift crosses the stratosphere of Earth, his range rapidly decreases. Outside of Earth or Earth-like environments, his range goes down to 300 km.
Familiar Faces: The portals can only open up to locations Rift has personally been to, or can directly see in front of him. While his missions have helped him travel to all sorts of places around the globe, he can't portal into any secret bases. He can portal across a room, but only if he can see the other side. If it's blocked by a big ol' door, he can't get through.
Eyes: But his secondary eyes form, they're as sensitive as regular eyes. Yes, you can poke them like regular eyes. This paints a bunch of easy targets on his body. He also very disgusted by them and tries to keep them a secret; find a way to expose them to the world, and you can completely throw him off his game.

Abilities
Multilingual: Having grown up with a Portuguese parent, Rift can speak Portuguese. Since the languages are so similar, he can also speak Spanish.
Equipment and Assets:
Weapon Cache: He has several guns, tranq guns, swords and knives hidden at various locations. Given his ability to get them instantly, he has access to dozens of various basic weapons.
Rift's mother was an Irish immigrant from Dublin, having moved to America during the Troubles. He grew up with stories of those days, and would occasionally come home to hear news of the death or disappearance of family members still there. His father was a Portuguese immigrant from Lisbon. Rift grew up like many kids, fearing mutants would kill him for being a human. At the same time, he also feared being a mutant, because everyone else would want to kill him. It didn't help that his family was anti-mutant. Naturally, he was in the "perfect" position to become a mutant. His powers manifested at age 12.
When he got his powers, he would frequently use them to escape bullies, bad situations, fights with friends, and even his own home when he felt the need. Over the years, his disappearances would become longer and more frequent, until he finally and permanently left his hometown after graduating high school. This also got him in the habit of taking off from a situation whenever he felt uncomfortable, leading him to abandon problems without properly resolving them.
Rift would come to embrace his mutant heritage as he got used to his powers. Maybe it was also a response to the anti-mutant rhetoric he'd been surrounded with all his life. But the hate he felt from humans became mutual, and he ended up developing a mild disdain for non-mutants in general. But they were worth working for if they had the money, right?
Speaking of money, he'd spend his early adult life using his powers as an Uber-esque transport service. Word of his abilities spread and people would contact him for other jobs. This would eventually bloom to mildly successful work as a freelancer. Now, he's often hired by heroes, criminals and companies alike. His ability to move from place to place with ease have helped him act as a smuggler, transportation, a spy, and a thief. However, he still retains something of a moral compass, refusing to seriously hurt people - particularly mutants and those weaker than him.
Other Information:
- Rift is Catholic.
- Years of listening to his maternal family have helped him perfect an Irish accent. He'll sometimes slip into a Dublin accent out of habit. He also speaks Portuguese and Spanish with a slight Portuguese accent.
- His official codename is Rift, but for various business-related reasons, he's also known by several aliases: Bluebird, Luscinia, Luzon, Cardinal, Ripple, and Thrush. He'll use a different name to obscure his identity, or know what kind of group is hiring him. For example, one criminal organization calls him Cardinal. Anyone who calls him by that name is likely associated with that name. The NYPD know him as Luscinia.
- Rift is part fairy, on his mother's side. Some might be able to sense the whiff of magic coming off of him. He isn't trained, so he can't use magic.
- He goes by "Rift" almost exclusively, since it's the name he chose for himself.
His relationship with Heather, such was it was, had lasted two months. It was a new record for Rift, since his quasi-relationships/friends-with-benefit arrangements tended to last a few days, at most. But Heather gave him a place to stay while he was in town, and things just came naturally between the two of them.
But seasons change, and their love went cold. Sparked by a minor argument, and maybe a desire to make her feel bad about losing him, he had been pulling himself away from her for the past several days. Quick and quiet answers to any questions became the norm, physical and emotional intimacy were a thing of the past, and whatever details about his life would be change or obscure whenever he talked to her - just lying for the sake of it.
It was petty, yes. But it made leaving easier. And leaving was absolutely the best option, because there was no way he was going to stick around and try to fix things. That took time, and it would likely just end up being wasted time.
They had just finished dinner in her apartment. They sat on opposite chairs in the living room, watching TV. Neither of them were willing to talk to each other, or even pay attention to the other. They just looked at each other from the corners or their eyes and stuck to watching whatever was on BBC at the moment.
"Just goin' out for some milk," Rift would tell her.
"Just goin' out for some milk," Rift would tell her.
Silently, he would rise to leave the room. She could see him leave his chair, walk beyond the corner and disappear from sight. There was a bright light - what she assumed was light from another room as he went inside. Little did she know, this would be the last she'd see of him.
