" That'd be me. The Spider-Man of tomorrow, here to save today... "

For a while Peter forgot everything. Spider-Man was another life, the problems plaguing the streets of New York were a bad dream, and work was so far away that it wasn’t a concern. Mary Jane was the cure for all that ailed him and during these seemingly too brief times where he got to be just regular old Peter Parker, holding his beautiful wife, life was good. Beyond good it was perfect. It didn’t matter how many times life (or a supervillain) knocked him down, it didn’t matter how often he failed to stop some lunatic, it didn’t even matter how often he actually lost to the evils out there, MJ was his rock that patched him back up and made him realize that what he did was worth it. If things went his way the entire rest of the night would be dedicated to showing her just how much he cared and what she meant to him.
"God I love you," he said.
And it did go his way.
-------------------------------
A few days later, Friday Night…
Peter had gotten out of work at the high school as quickly as he could, opting to take work home with him and grade papers over the weekend. He turned off his cell phone to avoid any last minute calls from the Bugle and the entire way home he prayed to God, Thor, or anyone listening that no psychopaths in garish costumes decided to rob, murder, blowup, or otherwise harass the city. Tonight was too important.
When he finally got home, ahead of Mary Jane this time, he couldn’t believe the Parker Luck hadn’t kicked in yet. Grabbing a quick shower he pulled out a fresh costumed and donned it in short order. Standing there waiting for Mary Jane in full costume, sans mask, he smiled. No doubt she’d stroll through the door and expect date night to be called off because of some kind of Spider related emergency. In truth it was all a part of date night because for things to work out, they had to travel Spidey Style.

Another day of canvassing Broadway left Mary Jane mildly unhinged. She spoke with one agent who wanted to sign her for swimsuit commercials. Another man, a director, was trying to talk her into the possibility of a hero action movie but then when he realized she wasn't Scarlett Johannsen dismissed her faster than a cat running from water. Another man, this one just a patron of one of the musicals, kept trying to ask her out, while one of the actors from one of the shows came up to her and patted her backside as if it were some kind of compliment. His hands tried not to stop there but Mary Jane kept him in his place by hurrying to another crowd of women who graciously rescued her. Yeah, Mary Jane had a stellar day, so it was with great relief when she called it early and caught the metro to go home.
Tonight was the night of the special date night Peter had planned. MJ had eagerly anticipated it for the past two days and was able to become more excited about it on her travels home. She even had a bit of a spring to her step by the time she walked past their favorite deli and waved to the man inside who knew her by name. She never noticed anyone around her during this time, or she might have seen someone get on the metro at the same place she did and then get off at her stop. The man followed her as far as the deli, then went inside as Mary Jane walked the next fifty feet to her apartment building. By the time she entered the apartment itself, all her cares about the day had all but vanished.
Then, as MJ saw Peter standing there waiting for her with his Spider-man suit on, all of her worries and frustrations from the day came flooding back. She closed the door behind her so no one else saw Pete standing without a mask in her home, but her face had fallen in resignation. "Crap," she mumbled. MJ leaned back against the door. "Something's come up, didn't it? Now you have to work tonight."

Peter stood there sheepishly for a moment, one hand absently scratching at the back of his head. There had been plenty of times when he had been forced to abruptly cancel plans whether they were date nights, a family get together, or even special events like the time MJ was nominated for an award. Spider-Man and all the responsibility and danger that came with him had interfered in their lives over and over again. So when he saw the dejected, depressed expression on his wife’s face he felt bad for letting her think that old habits were dying hard.
“Hon, I am really sorry about this,” he started as he had so many times before. “But you should dress warm enough.”
He double checked his webshooters to make sure they were full, added replacement cartridges to his belt, and smirked.
“In order to do date night right, you are going to have to fly Air Spidey,” he joked. “I booked you first class.”
Much as he wished he could stoop to such low levels as to say they had to web swing to the location just so he could hold her close, truth was it really was necessary to reach their destination. The holding close part was just a nice extra.
“You okay sweetheart?” he asked with genuine concern. “My Hubby Sense is tingling, telling me you’ve had a time of it today. Want to talk about it?”

Mary Jane's face screwed up as Peter told her she should dress warm enough. At first, it really didn't make any sense to her befuddled mind, having been so immediately depressed thinking that the bad day would simply not get any better. But then as Peter continued, Mary Jane wrapped her brain around what was happening. Her face brightened up as he clarified by saying he booked her first class Spidey style. A smile slowly crossed her lips before she closed the gap to her husband and kissed his cheek before smacking him on the shoulder playfully.
"That was mean!" she chided him jokingly as she made her way to the bedroom. Of course, MJ would enjoy the joke just about as much as Pete did but she had such a rotten day that it took her a few minutes to appreciate it quite as much. He noticed her usual cheery demeanor was somewhat abated today and inquired about her day. Mary Jane tried to deflect. "It was just a long day without any good results," she replied. "But you're going to make me forget all about it!"
She slipped her dress over her head in the bedroom. There was no wearing a frilly dress on a Spidey "flight", not at night and definitely not in this weather. While it had been warming up into pleasant springtime temperatures during the day, night was still quite chilly. She began sorting through her drawer for a pair of jeans. Mary Jane couldn't be sure of his destination, but knowing he was in costume meant this was more likely an intimate affair - something that gave her pause considering that while a dress would be cold it could also be less restricting. She snorted at her thoughts and pulled a pair of jeans from her drawer. She then pulled them on, one beautiful leg at a time, and went in search of a sweatshirt.
"So where are we going?" she inquired while looking through her wintry wardrobe. "Just want to know if I should I dress really warm, really comfy, or really..." MJ turned to meet Peter's gaze and waggled her eyebrows in play, "not much at all?"

Peter blushed in response. Blushed, but damn sure didn’t blink.
“Well, warm is subjective. Let’s just say where we are headed has quite the view so we’ll be up a ways. So maybe…not too snug?” he said sheepishly.
He performed another check of his webshooters just to be safe. Normally he wouldn’t be so cautious, but there was no such thing as too safe when his wife was traveling with him. Even if there was no danger traveling across New York’s skyline one strands of webbing, there was no reason to end up ruining what was supposed to be a great evening by running out of web fluid.
“You remember back shortly after we first met? How you, Gwen, Harry and I would always meet up at the Coffee Bean? Back then they had that one guy in back, the one who really knew how to make up the perfect malt. You absolutely loved the way he made them and that bagel sandwich too. Well I managed to track him down. He’s running a food truck down in Spanish-Harlem now, but he’s going to be cooking up some of the old staples just for us. And that is just part one of tonight’s agenda.”
Smiling as he tugged his mask down into place he couldn’t help but look forward to the rest of the evening.
“Oh, and you can expect entertainment as well.”

He's so cute when he blushes, she thought again. It was definitely something she hoped he never out-grew.
Pete mentioned that not only were they swinging through the chilly air to their destination, but they would also remain up in altitude. This implied to Mary Jane that more clothing was probably better. She grabbed a snug fitting t-shirt then tossed a sweater over the top of it. She grabbed a knit hat to top the ensemble and stepped out of the closet as Peter spoke of the times with Gwen and Harry at the Coffee Bean. Mary Jane's mouth was watering before he spoke of the malt because it was her first thought at the mention of the shop. She squealed a little and her eyes lit up like Christmas trees when he said he found the person who used to make her the malts and that he "hired" him to make them their favorite throwbacks tonight. She practically skipped to meet him again, planting a kiss on the mask he pulled down just a little too soon!
"You never cease to amaze me, Spider-Man!" she cooed.
Mary Jane pulled the knit cap down firmly over her head as she grabbed a jacket to go over her layers. She slid it on, zipped it up and then looped her arm through Spidey's. She looked up at him with adoring eyes and smiled. "I can't wait to find out what the entertainment will be!" she said excitedly, then lowered her lids in tease. "Take me and do with me what you will! I am at your mercy, Mr. Parker."

Despite his mask now being in place, Peter couldn’t help but smirk. God, for all the times I have cursed my life and the things I have to deal with, I am sorry. This makes it all worth it.“Keep talking like that Mrs. Parker and I’m not sure we’ll be making it to our destination!” he replied. He moved to the window, opened it, and grabbed MJ around the waist as he prepared to swing. “Hold on tight hon,” he cautioned her. With that he swung out into the crisp night air, careful not to perform any unnecessary flips, spins, and turns. Traveling with someone was not the same as webslinging solo. Still fun to be sure and far faster than taking public transportation, but different in a good way. He also went out of his way to not go as fast as he could have, allowing MJ to feel what he felt when he swung around the city. The wind whipping past, the freedom of moving unhindered, and the clarity that comes with being above all the traffic and the lights. All of it was part of the cool that came with being Spider-Man. As they neared the site of the date he smiled. He landed gently on a high rooftop and carefully made certain his wife had gained proper footing. “Recognize this place?” he asked. “It’s changed since back then, but this used to be the restaurant that we went to on our first date, the one Aunt May set up that was nearly interrupted by Rhino? It’s gone through some changes since then, becoming more upscale and finally closing, but the view from up here is amazing.”He glanced at his cellphone to see the time. “Be right back,” he promised and hopped over the edge of the building. After several minutes passed he returned, malts in hand as well as a bag of food. “Malts as promised and burgers from the same stand we used to hit up on campus. It moved to downtown when the deal with the university ended, but the son is continuing his father’s legacy of grilled goodness.”

Mary Jane smirked seeing Pete do the same as he warned her about not going anywhere. She knew he would wait if only becasue he already made plans! He was nothing if not reliable in that regard. Oh, maybe he wasn't fully reliable with her at times, breaking dates and whatnot to do his crime fighting, but this time he had made arrangements with other people. Spider-Man, the accomplished neighborhood web-slinging hero would be damned sure to honor those agreements, or he'd have an uncanny reason not to. Simply making love to his wife was not the latter, even if she wished quietly it could be. It's not like they were newlyweds anymore, but sometimes she liked to pretend....
He told her to hang on, and MJ wrapped her arms around Peter's costumed neck tightly as he wrapped an arm around her waist and took them in a leap right out of their apartment window. She didn't scream, squeal or even look down because she wasn't afraid that Peter would drop her. Mary Jane trusted her husband implicitly. Her only real fear was that one of his enemies might see them together or come to have a little pay back while they were swinging around. So her eyes remained vigilant, but even so she failed to see the man who watched them depart from the sidewalk down below.
Ah, the worries of the day washed away in the winds of the evening as Mary Jane swung through the city on Peter's arm! Her eyes watered from the dryness that came from it, and the chill (Or maybe it was early allergies? who knew?), but MJ didn't bother to try to wipe the tears away. She let them slide into her hair form the corners of her eyes and smiled the entire trip to the rooftop where Peter set her down. Then, Mary Jane wiped gently at her face to dry it but all the time she had a smile on her face.
He asked if she recognized the area and Mary Jane squinted to try to figure it out from her topside view. she wasn't usually on rooftops when she was exploring a neighborhood, but she still probably would have missed where they were. She hadn't been trying to map the city while they were swinging. So as she looked around, Peter pointed out where they were, then hurriedly dismissed himself form her presence. Mary Jane watched him disappear, then sat near the edge of the roof and looked around while she waited. When he returned, her patience was rewarded with malty goodness! At this, MJ nearly squealed. She hurriedly took the malts from his hand and left him holding the bag.
"I don't know how you do it, Parker. Successfully juggling world famous burgers and my most favorite-est malts - without spilling! - all while swinging from roof to roof on a single thread." Mary Jane smiled even as she sipped on a malt and voiced an "Mmmm." The ice cream rested a little on her lips as she took a break from sucking. She swallowed then cooed, "You're spectacular!"

Peter smiled, though she could not yet see it for the mask.
“I know right? I mean who would have thunk it? Considering I was such a klutz…well was, is, you get the picture. ” he joked. “Hold on a sec, I almost forgot.”
Stepping away behind a vent for a few moments he returned sans mask, hoodie over his costume, and something else in hand. It was an old, laughably large boom-box that positively screamed late 80’s. He sat it down behind them as he picked up his own malt, sipped, and second guessed the intelligence behind cold beverages in this kind of weather.
“A little mood music?” he asked, waggling his eyebrows.
Pressing a button the boombox started to play, the whirl of an old cassette tape audible. Within moments a song began. Peter couldn’t have said who the artist was today anymore than he could have back when the song was played on the airways, but it was some kind of 90’s R&B tune that would get even the youngsters of today swooning.
“Remember this?” he asked smiling. “It’s the mixtape you made for me before officially started dating. I figured yours was the better pick, considering the one I made for you had the Nova special on magnets recorded on it.”
Calm down Parker. It’s okay to not hide the geek. She’s your wife and it isn’t like she’s going to runaway screaming now. Reminders that you are nerdtastic and spectacular are okay! he thought, feeling goofy over bringing up his sad attempt at being cool.
“I guess this is what the kids would call ‘fresh’ or is that not a thing anymore?” he said grinning.

Mary Jane was sucking on the malt but there was difficulty in making it move through the straw. She sucked harder only to have the straw collapse in on itself. She sighed inwardly, happy that she at least got a taste of the delicious drink before it hit its superior frozen-ness. She removed the straw from her lips as Peter joked about how he used to be - and possibly still is - a klutz. The woman chuckled gently, a retort on the tip of her tongue, but Peter suddenly remembered something and moved quickly to retrieve it.
MJ shivered involuntarily as she quickly realized the folly of holding the frozen drink in her bare hands. She bent and set it on the rooftop by her feet and picked up the bag of food. She opened the top of the bag and stuck her nose inside, inhaling both the scent and the warmth. Her green eyes peered over the top of the bag to where Pete had disappeared and hoped he would return soon. If he didn't she was likely to begin eating her sandwich without him lest it cool off too much! Her hopes were fulfilled nigh immediately when Peter emerged wearing a more casual hoodie over his costume, sans his mask, and carrying a throwback to the eighties. Mary Jane dropped the bag from her face and laughed.
"Where on earth did you find that?!" she said, laughing. His answer was to waggle his eyebrows at her and simply offer mood music. The joy remained on her face as he set it up and started some of their favorite tunes. She knew the music intimately and the perma-smile on her face grew as Peter pointed out that this was the same mixed tape she had made for him so long ago. Her amusement erupted into a more comfortable grin as Peter reminded her of his own attempt at making her a mixed tape and then seemed to feel mildly embarrassed for it. She moved closer to him and ran the fingers of her free hand through the hair above his left ear.
"You're adorable - both then and now," she said and confirmed it with a kiss. She lingered close to his face with more amusement playing in her eyes. "But I'm not sure 'fresh' is still the lingo - and it's definitely not something kids today would use to describe the Smashing Pumpkins."
Her stomach growled loudly and MJ acknowledged it by lifting the bag of food in her other hand. "Time to eat, Tiger. My stomach is complaining and you know how it gets when its angry."

Peter smirked as he heard the question. Finding the boombox had indeed been an ordeal in and of itself. Every store he had gone to looked at him as if he were insane looking for technology that they felt was ancient by comparison to today’s standards. There was a radio/cd/cassette tape combo he found that may have even played old vinyl records but it was out of his price range and not nearly as easy to lug around. That was when he had turned to a friend, who also thought he was nuts, but who happened to have an old one somewhere in storage.
“You know me. I have connections. Had to send the request down the Spidey pipeline so to speak, but it was totally worth it,” he said smugly, not revealing that his “connection” was Johnny Storm.
As he walked over to her he smiled widely. “You sure they don’t use fresh? Does that mean slammin’, the bomb, and talk to the hand are out too? Boy do I owe Mysterio an apology. Talk to the hand is still in though right?”
Rubbing his hands together, partially in anticipation of the food and partially from the cold, he said, “Here’s hoping the food is still as good as it was back then.”
Man did I not think this through. Cold as it is this whole thing could be ruined. And really? Malts in the cold? What was I thinking?
"You too cold honey? I stashed some civilian clothes just in case, have an extra jacket if you want. It isn't terribly thick but..." he offered sheepishly.

Pete answered her curiosity by stating he sent his request down the "Spidey pipeline." The phrasing amused MJ but the smell of the food was simply too much to ignore. She opened the bag as he seemed to acquiesce to her statement about eating and pulled out a burger. A fry was stuck in the paper wrapper and Mary Jane stole it quickly before it fell. There would be no food casualties while she was on watch!
He was still walking toward her and rubbing his hands together when she got the wrapper pulled down on her sandwich. MJ still held the bag of food in her free hand, the one whose fingers she used to pull down the wrapper. She anticipated him reaching for his own sandwich, at which time she would playfully keep it from him. Pulling the bag away and turning her body as if to keep it from him. Her playfulness would be postponed, however, as Peter considered the chill in the air. MJ had largely ignored it but now that he mentioned it her fingers were cold. Still, she wouldn't even consider any gloves or anything until she was through with her food.
"Nah, I'm all right," she assured him. Mary Jane took a rather large bite of her sandwich and chewed a bit unladylike. Ketchup was dribbling down out of the corner of her mouth but she didn't care. She was in Heaven!
MJ swallowed a little bit, just enough to talk through the rest. "Oh my gof', Pet'r! Thish ish 'oooo good!" She held the bag up and teased him with it, jerking it away. She continued with her mouth mostly full of food. "Fink I'll keep it all for m'felf!"

Peter smirked as she played keep away. He couldn't help it. It was these small moments, when he wasn't having to save the world or talk about his day, when conversation was more than complaints about the Jameson or fears over this brightly suited nutjob or that one, that gave him his reason. His reason for being Spider-Man, his reason for not resorting to the methods some of the so-called anti-heroes relished. Sure there was the whole "With Great Power Must Also Come Great Responsibility" thing. That was a big one and something he could never forget. But MJ was the reason he didn't just quit when he realized no matter how many people he saves he could never balance the scales. She put him back together after Gwen, after every battle that was worse than what came before, and she was his rock. That was why he kept doing this. To see her smile, to make sure the world was safe for her, and to make certain that there would always be reasons for her to smile and have fun. Those were the times when he smiled and knew his place in the world.
Feigning mock pain and clutched his chest.
"Egads! B-b-but how will I ever have to strength to swing us home without sustenance?" he asked, reaching out with a napkin to gently dab away the ketchup from the corner of her mouth. "I mean I may be sensational and on occasion spectacular, some would go so far as to claim amazing, but even I need to refuel from time to time!"
Back of his hand over his eyes he continued on in melodramtic fashion.
"Alas, thus is the plight of the hero. To save the city, to pummel the evildoers, and to lose out on the greatest sandwich known to mankind. It is my lot in life!" he complained, peeking out between fingers to look at his wife. "I am so not winning any Oscars any time soon am I?"

Mary Jane had to giggle (without spewing her food - which takes talent!) as Peter clutched his chest with one hand and deftly wiped the ketchup dribbling from the corner of her mouth with the other. He was seriously playing up the martyrdom of his proposed plight, and he was most certainly going over the top with it. She swallowed her bite and shook her head at his over-the-top theatrics, then wiped her own mouth to make sure she took care of any other inadvertent messiness.
"Oh gosh, Peter, I don't know," she said, feigning approval for his acting. She reached toward him with her burger, offering a sort of peace offering. "I think you might win Mary Jane's Choice Award for 'Silliest Super Hero Ever'."
She smiled waiting for him to take a bite of her sandwich, then with her other hand offered him the bag that contained the rest of the food so that he could enjoy his own. Then, having a free hand, MJ made sure to take another napkin from the bag, re-wrap her own sandwich in the paper it came in to reflect how much they'd eaten, then she sat down by the protruding vent on the rooftop. It effectively blocked a lot of the breeze that was making things so chilly, and in doing so MJ was not only a tad warmer but also more able to enjoy her food and shake.
After another bite, Mary Jane reached to steal a fry from the bag. "This was a great idea, Peter. Sometimes you surprise me with how romantic you can be." She gestured around them. "I mean, yeah it's a little chilly, but this is a special place and you not only remembered but you put in a lot of effort to help us relive our memories here." MJ smiled at Peter. "Thank you."

Peter sat down next to Mary Jane making sure she had the majority of the vent and took a large bite of his own sandwich. He closed his eyes as he savored the food, the flavors something he hadn't experienced in many years. It took him back to days gone by and he smiled. Most people would have claimed they were simpler times, but for Peter there was never anything simple, not since that spider bit him and changed his life forever. Sure, he had less "grown up" responsibilities back then and had enjoyed hanging out with his friends at the Coffee Bean whenever he could cover for why he was late or bruised or bloodied, but really those times were not all fun and games. Back then he was still getting comfortable with being Spider-Man and all the duties and trials that came with accepting that role. Sure he ran off at the mouth to villains, but it was a defense mechanism to hide how terrified he was. His personal, non-costumed life was no better as he ran around scared someone like Aunt May would discover who he was or that his friends would become targets. Then of course he lost Gwen and it shook him to his core until MJ came along and put him back together again.
Even then he remembered the uncertainty. He couldn't grasp why someone like Mary Jane would be interested in a geek like him and then later why she put up with everything that came with dating and later marrying the man who J. Jonah Jameson dubbed a menace to the city. Sleepless nights not knowing if he was coming home, watching the news as one costumed whacko or another tried to kill Spider-Man, going for hours or longer without any information at all, or worst of all being there when his other life followed him home. A lesser woman would have split well before vows would exchange, but not Mary Jane. Whether it had been as Peter Parker college student, Peter Parker doing his best impersonation of an adult, or the Amazing Spider-Man she had been there for it all. Always right along side him. He could ask for nothing better and this being able to reminisce about the past was, well, a small gesture that couldn't even begin to show how much she meant to him back then or now.
"Your welcome babe, but really this is nothing. I wish I could do more," he replied, his smile touching his eyes. "I mean I was tempted to reach into those deep Parker pockets and whisk you away to Tahiti or the Bahamas or you know, something like that."
He dabbed a fry into ketchup and smirked as he downed it making no mention that the real Parker money had been blown on the meal.
"But no one can learn of my secret life as a jet setting playboy by day, vigilante by night. Besides my butler that is. Otherwise this whole poor photographer identity I have cultivated will come crashing down."
Sliding an arm around her shoulders he sighed, contently.
"I love you. I want you to know that and to know that based on the rumblings I have been hearing this...this may be the last night like this we get for a long while. But even if it were to be my last night ever? There is nobody I'd rather spend it with. That includes the butler."
