For the past couple of months, Rift and I have been plotting a big supernatural/espionage event with Davezilla and Brainygirl, and we're reaching a point in the narrative where we will need to be bringing in a larger influx of players to participate. Just let us know if you would like to participate, and which one of your characters you'd like involved. For the magic plot (the seal bearers in particular), we would prefer one character per player. However, Hydra and SHIELD characters may be needed for the spy plot - Rift will provide more details on this part as we come to it later in the tale.
The Plot Thus Far
In the midst of separate investigations, one involving a string of serial, likely demonic, murders around New York City, and the other tracking down remaining members of the Nazi occult division, the Thule Society, Elsa Bloodstone and the Winter Soldier find themselves teaming up against an unexpectedly common enemy - the wily demon lord of Hell, Mephisto. After gravely injuring the monster hunter and tauntingly using her as a bargaining chip, Mephisto offers Bucky a special assignment...and a deal.
In order for both to walk free, Bucky is instructed to use his skills as the Winter Soldier to assassinate the current leader of Hydra, the Viper, and pin the blame on SHIELD. Should he fail to comply, both their souls are forfeit to hell, and Mephisto will turn Elsa into one of the creatures she was trained all her life to destroy. Should he succeed, they're both free to go.
But what consequence does the death of Madame Hydra and the subsequent war between Hydra and SHIELD bring? And how does this benefit Mephisto?
Their souls now bound to one another, Elsa and Bucky must team up to stop the demon's nefarious plans before they come to fruition. To do this, they must banish and seal Mephisto away for good.
Two Sides of the Tale
This event is intended to highlight both political espionage and supernatural elements. One half of the story involves the attempted assassination of Madame Hydra. The other follows the gathering of magics to banish and seal Mephisto back to Hell where he belongs.
Where Do Other Players Come In?
When Mephisto left Hell and stepped upon Earth, the Ten Seals of Exsilium were broken apart and scattered about the near vicinity of where he first appeared. The seals are drawn to those with a life energy that matches their own magical signature, and can only be removed with a mage's spell or the death of the host. If the host dies, the seal shifts positions to the next nearest signature that matches.
Mephisto's demon armies are drawn to the seals and their bearers, striking them down one by one to prevent all ten from coming together and recreating the binding magic that will force them and their master back to the pit. The demon lord cannot be banished back to Hell if his plans are to come to fruition, and the trail of bodies being left behind is merely a means to give Mephisto more time to succeed in his goals.
Using magic borrowed from Doctor Strange, Bloodstone and Winter Soldier are also tracking down the seals, transferring their binding powers into the Book of Vishanti in order to seal Mephisto away for good. Unfortunately, the demons are always just one step ahead.
Your character is a bearer of one of the Ten Seals of Exsilium, though they most likely do not realize it, and is being stalked by one of Mephisto's demon generals. They find themselves wandering or being lured into a Hellscape, a tiny pocket of the Hell dimension, where they must fight a part of themselves, something kept hidden in their heart for a long time, something perhaps not very nice.
The character must either face their demon or be consumed by it.
Story Structure
What we are hoping to go for with this event is a series of one-shot threads, one for each of the ten seals, starring and highlighting your characters and focusing on development and analysis. Perhaps there's a piece of backstory you've been meaning to explore? A part of their overall personality or flaws therein that you feel should be addressed? Some emotional loose ends that need to be tied up for your character's story to truly come to a close or continue to the next arc? This is your chance to do it! We just ask that your story be a bit more dreamlike, more metaphorical and symbolic. As Elsa notes, demons love metaphor and irony – what your character sees and fights should be the internal made external.
For example, Daredevil might find himself in some sort of altar/courtroom hybrid, on trial for the sins he feels he committed, or Black Widow could end up in a grand ballet recital alongside a troupe of steampunk ballerina bots.
Your thread can be a solo piece, if you want, or you can have Bucky and Elsa, or another player character that is relevant to yours pop in to help you through. By the end of the adventure and upon facing down your demon (regardless of it being a solo or a multi-character thread), B&E will track down your character to remove the seal from them, and the Hellscape will subside, returning you to New York.
At this point, you can decide if your character would stick around for the final showdown or if they would prefer to leave the event. This is to put more power into the hands of the players regarding their commitment to the event, based on their own availability and what they feel their character would do – if you want to just do the one tie-in thread and call it done, great! If you want to continue the main plot to the end, also great!
