It was the first Sunday of December. It was also a cold winter night in new york. Carol could feel the cold of her breath as dhe let out a deep sigh, watching said breath swirl in a silvery mist. She had been given the OK to do hero work again For months now after the invvasion. she was considered to be once again in her right mind, though in truth she wasin't so sure. Sure she had said she was back, and mostly she was, but reclaiming her idenity as Warbird didn't keep Mckinny from stinging. Stopping the Illum'inati didn't bring the dead back to life and there was nothing she could do to change that fact.
As she walked down the sidewalk, she heard the sound of a beautiful singing choir, following the sound she came across the sight of a beautiful church, at first, she thought it was Mormon but upon reading the sign she noticed that it appeared to be of a different denomination. The Sign read as follows.
"the Midtown Church of the Followers of the Way welcomes you Sponsored by the Order of the Fisherman:" But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets" -Acts 24:14"
-Feel free to stay to help decorate the tree and some hot cocoa after services
She found herself intrigued. She couldn't Remember the last time she had stepped foot inside a church building. Her dad came from a traditional catholic family, but due to life experiences he had turned atheist, while her mom, being a Kree who had all but cut herself from the Empire and assimilated into Earthling American culture, it was hard to say exactly what her belief system was.
Carol used to be what some would consider Protestant, but her faith had been broken after being absorbed by Rogue. She had watched as parts of her mind changed, she practically felt her very soul nearly fade from existence as she nearly merged with Rogue and...well almost become her. Between that and the gods and godlike beings she had ate with, drank with, fought along side with, and fought against, it was becoming increasingly more difficult to believe there was a singular all-powerful God that dwarfed everyone else in terms of power, yet somehow cared for even the littlest of sparrows and even loved her like a daughter.
She waited until everyone started to leave before coming in. She didn't notice anything at first, until she took a closer look at many of the members. Pale skin, red eyes, visible fangs. These were vampires, a lot of vampires. Had she somehow stumbled across a vampire church?
She walked into the empty building. she couldin't help but marvel at it's beauty. She didn't know what she was expecting, maybe some kind of satanic heavy metal vibe but it certainly wasin't well...this.
She sat down at one of the pews and looked at one of the stained glass windows above. It was a knight in shining armor holding a sword. there was writing of a scripture and to her non-Suprise it was Ephesians 6:10-17. She couldn't help but chuckle. Somehow she wouldin't be suprised if there WAS in fact some supernatural object called the Armor of God.
"Somehow it wouldin't suprise me to learn there is a LITERAL armor out there somewhere."
Carol jumped about 50 ft letting out a "Oh my gosh!"
The man took a step back. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you there Ms. Danvers. It's an honor to have an Avenger step inside our building.
Carol turned around to see the source of the voice. He was a tall man burly man in a preacher's robe. He had white hair and red eyes, when he smiled his fangs visibly showed, clearly, he was a vampire, perhaps he was even the ringleader of this group of...whatever they were.
"I'm Christopher, Christopher Allgood." the man said offering a hand as he sat down next to her. Despite his large and imposing phisique the man was softspoken his voice was deep and smooth.
"Carol Danvers, though you already knew that, Ah hope you don't mind Ah came in after everyone left."
"Nah, It's always intimidating for someone who's trying to find their way back to jump right back into things."
Carol's eyes widened. "How did you...?"
"Ms Danvers, I've been on this earth for over 1000 years. I know someone whose faith is shaky when I see them. You don't have to tell me anything."
Carol just nodded. With him being a vampire, it somehow didn't surprise her that he was somehow that old or that he was able to read people, plus Carol especially as of late wasn't very good at being stoic. Still, she wanted to change the subject. Her eyes immediately went to the communion table.
"Do you guys drink real blood and eat real flesh when you do communion?"
Allgood erupted into full belly laughter. "Oh goodness no, contrary to what you may think we're not THAT kind of church. It's unleavened bread and grape juice. One of our members is a messianic jew who owns a bakery and vineyard, he's a friend of mine." He couldn't help but sigh. "You don't have to answer this if you don't want to but...how long?"
"Years. It's just a lot of stuff has happened to make me question the presence of an All-Loving God."
Allgood nodded. "Believe me I've been there." he got up. "For what it is worth, the doors are always open to you. If you ever need an ear or a prayer. Though I do have a favor to ask if you don't mind."
"Sure what is it?" Carol was intrigued.
"Would you be willing to contribute to the decorating of the tree? It'd be an honor to have an Avenger partake."
Carol smiled "Sure"
Allgood led Carol to the tree, and she couldn't help but marvel. it was strange. It was a simple evergreen that had been decorated with various ornaments. Some traditional others not so much.
"Typical we have people put an ornament and a verse or phrase of hope. Just put what is in accordance to your heart." After giving herself a minute she decided to place gold tinsel around the tree. She then hooked a tag to it. Thinking of a good phrase to put, her mind went to something her mother once told her long ago. She could not help but smile as she grabbed a pen. She wrote the following Phase.
